Dom Leech likely to miss remaining T20 Blast due to 'freak foot injury'; coach Gibson speaks about woes

The young seamer Dom Leech will likely get another unexpected break from the game. Reports suggest that the right-arm pacer can be ruled out of the entire 2022 edition of the T20 Blast following a foot injury. Leech has broken a metatarsal in his left foot and will be thus unavailable for selection.

It comes as a big blow for the pacer as he had recently signed a contract to extend his stay at Headingley till the end of 2024. Also, this is the second injury for Leech in the T20 Blast 2022. He missed the few opening games for Yorkshire due to a broken rib injury.

The bowler returned to the playing XI for the three T20 games and looked in good touch. His best performance for Yorkshire came in his last match against Derbyshire, where he picked three wickets in just two overs while bowling at an economy rate of 6.5.

Yorkshire's head coach, Ottis Gibson, seemed disappointed with the seamer's injury as he labelled it as a freak foot injury.

"I was impressed with Dom in pre-season when I saw him, and we gave him an opportunity when he came back from his first injury. Then he goes and gets a freak foot injury. He's had surgery (Friday), and I'm told by the medical team that it's gone well. But it's just so disappointing for him because he bowled well at Derby.

"All the games he's played, he's gone really nicely, and we were looking to get him more involved. But it looks like his season could be over. It's going to be six to 12 weeks of recovery. If it's 12, the season's over. I'm hoping not. At the same time, we have to be realistic," Ottis Gibson said, as quoted by The Cricketer.

Regarding Leech's new contract, Gibson added that he is an exciting player and adds good value to the squad. Though the head coach pointed out a few technical errors in the seamer's game, he hopes for an entire winter season with Leech.

"He's someone we think very highly of. So, to tie him down to a new contract is fantastic for us. He came into this summer off the back of winter when I didn't really get the opportunity to work that much with him. There are a few things we need to iron out technically. But I think it's very exciting. We look forward to having a full winter with him," Gibson concluded.
