With the 2025 IPL mega auction on the horizon, the cricket world is abuzz with speculation, especially regarding the fate of Mumbai Indians’ former captain, Rohit Sharma. Having led MI to a record-breaking five titles, Rohit has been a pillar of the franchise’s success.

Rohit, the batter has struggled In IPL

However, last season saw MI handing over the captaincy to Hardik Pandya, a move that left fans shocked and disappointed. In a dramatic turn, MI’s experiment with Pandya at the helm saw the team struggle, finishing at the bottom of the league.

But now, Rohit Sharma’s future with MI is uncertain, and his former teammate Harbhajan Singh believes it could spell fireworks at the auction. The problem is, Rohit Sharma is a supreme leader, but as a batter, he has struggled to play big knocks. In 257 matches, he has 6628 runs, at an average of 29.72, with a strike-rate of just 131.

The numbers don't really justify the talent he possesses. Hence, purely on captaincy basis, he will fetch big amount, but on batting performances, he doesn't deserve it.

Meanwhile, Rohit Sharma’s legacy with Mumbai Indians is legendary. Known for his calm demeanour and shrewd strategies, Rohit was instrumental in transforming MI into a juggernaut, a team that’s feared and respected in equal measure.

The decision to replace him with Pandya was like shifting gears in a storm, and it didn’t go down well with MI’s loyal fan base. At their home ground, the Wankhede Stadium, Pandya faced a hostile reception, an indication of just how deeply fans feel about Rohit’s tenure.

But it’s not just sentiment that’s on Rohit’s side. Even at 38, he has continued to showcase his mettle, both as a player and as a leader, most recently leading India to victory in T20 World Cup 2024.

His ability to provide explosive starts at the top and bring stability to a team is precisely why Harbhajan believes Rohit could be the ace up any franchise’s sleeve come auction day.

Hardik’s Redemption and MI’s Dilemma

While Hardik Pandya may have faced initial resistance, his heroics in India’s T20 World Cup win last year have restored some of his reputation. The all-rounder redeemed himself with stellar performances that were instrumental in India’s success, and the MI management might feel justified in their choice to hand him the reins.

Yet, with the auction on the horizon, Mumbai Indians are at a crossroads. Should they choose to retain Rohit, they’d be banking on his experience and legacy to turn their fortunes around.

But if they decide to let go, it could be the dawn of an all-out bidding war as teams scramble to sign one of the most respected captains in IPL history.

Rohit’s reputation precedes him, and if the star opener does indeed enter the auction pool, it’s safe to say he’ll be the one in the driver’s seat, dictating terms to prospective teams.
