Dilip Vengsarkar Lists Down WTC Final 2023 Challenges For Rohit Sharma

Rohit Sharma, fresh from his IPL 2023 run for Mumbai Indians, has joined his Indian teammates for the upcoming World Test Championship (WTC) final against Australia.

While Sharma will start out as one of India’s senior batters in their imminent WTC title clash, the dynamic opener recently experienced an underwhelming IPL season, returning with just 332 runs at a substandard average of 20.75.

Former Indian cricketer Dilip Vengsarkar reckons that the Indian captain might find it difficult against Australian bowlers in tough English conditions, considering he is switching to Tests straight from two months of competitive T20 action.

Vengsarkar reckons Sharma might find switch difficult to cope

Dilip Vengsarkar is not much concerned about Rohit Sharma’s poor form with the bat off late. Rather, the cricketer-turned-administrator is of the opinion that the Indian captain might find it difficult to switch from T20 format to Test mode in such a short span of time.

Vengsarkar emphasised the importance of preparing for the final, citing that the WTC title clash is a one-off battle with no second chances. While speaking on Hindustan Times, he said:

“More than the form I think the fact that he will be straightaway coming to the Test match from T20s might be a bit of an issue. I wish they had a few practice games before the WTC final. When you go into a Test match as big as this and remember, there are no second chances, unlike a series, it is important you are prepared well.”

Prior to the IPL 2023 season, Sharma led India in a four-match home Test series against Australia. While he struck a match-winning ton in the opening Test, the right-handed batter scored just 122 more runs in his subsequent five innings of the series, thus signalling a dip in his batting form.

The WTC final is set to be played between June 7 and June 11 at The Oval in London.
