CPL 10: Jamaica Tallawahs: SWOT Analysis

The tenth edition of the Caribbean Premier League is set to kickstart from 1st September onwards. The tournament spanning nearly a month will see six top-class teams battling it out for the crown of T20 champions of the Caribbean Islands.

The two-time champions, Jamaica Tallawahs, had an underwhelming campaign last season, finishing at the fifth spot with just four wins of their ten fixtures. As we move an inch closer to the CPL 2022, let's see what the Tallawahs' strengths are and what challenges they might face in the course of the mega event.

Strengths

Batting Depth

If we look at the Tallawahs' squad, we can see that they have an ample number of batting options. To be precise, a decent hitter like Migael Pretorius will likely come at eight, showing their batting unit's depth. The presence of incredible power-hitters like Brandon King, Kennar Lewis, Rovman Powell and Fabian Allen makes the Tallawahs' batting one of the most dangerous in the championship.

New ball bowling

Jamaica Tallawahs have a terrific set of new ball bowlers in Mohammad Amir and Migael Pretorius. While Pretorius emerged as Tallawahs' best bowler last season with 16 wickets at a surreal strike rate of 13.8, Amir scalped 11 wickets in seven outings at a brilliant economy of 6.12. If these two bowlers find movement early on, they could prove lethal for any batting lineup.

Weakness

Death Bowling

Although the Tallawahs have two genuinely good new ball bowlers, their death bowling could be a matter of concern for them in the tournament. Statistically, Amir has recorded a poor economy of 9.94, while Pretorius has gone for 14.1 runs per over in the slog overs in T20s since 2021.
Their third seamer Raymon Reifer has been no exception either, registering a mediocre economy of 11.16 in the death overs since 2020. Considering these facts, we reckon that controlling the run flow in the last five overs will be a daunting task for the Rovman Powell-led outfit.

Opportunity

Amir Jangoo

Amir Jangoo grabbed many eyeballs recently by playing a sensational 68-run-knock which ensured the Tallawahs' thumping victory over Barbados Royals in the ongoing Men's 6ixty competition. The youngster has shown much promise recently, and this tournament will be a fantastic opportunity for him to impress the national selectors by proving his mettle with the bat.

Threat

Mainstays' vulnerability against slow left-armers

Brandon King, Shamarh Brooks and Rovman Powell are the three mainstays of the Tallawahs' batting lineup. However, they have a common weakness of being vulnerable against left-arm off-spinners. While King and Powell have averaged 13.67 and 12.42 against SLAs since 2020, Brooks has a career average of a mere 17.7 against them. So, if you are up against the Tallawahs, unleash your left-arm spinner straightaway against their top four batters.
