COVID setback stuns Stars; dynamic duo doubtful for tournament opener

In an unfortunate turn of events, veteran cricketers, Joe Burns and Marcus Stoinis are doubtful for the BBL 12 opener against Sydney Thunder, as they are recovering from a COVID-19 infection.

Although Stoinis and Burns are available for selection, the final call on their participation in the game will be taken just before the toss. The news was surfaced by Melbourne Stars through a tweet that read,

"Melbourne Stars batters Marcus Stoinis and Joe Burns are recovering from a Covid-19 infection. Both are available for selection against the Sydney Thunder tonight. A decision will be made closer to the bat flip."

Both Stoinis and Burns are crucial players for the Stars, which is why their absence might adversely affect their BBL 2022 campaign.

Earlier, the Stars had shortlisted a 13-member squad for the tournament opener and will likely draft Clint Hinchliffe  and Tom Rogers if Burns and Stoinis fail to recover in time.

The game between Stars and Thunder starts at 1.45 PM IST.
