In a significant development, Australia have confirmed that Scott Boland is the front-runner in the race to partner Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins in the first Test against South Africa in Brisbane.

Australia head coach Andrew McDonald hinted at Boland getting the nod ahead of his competitor Michael Neser to replace injured Josh Hazlewood in the Gabba Test.

McDonald, who succeeded Justin Langer, stated that Boland has earned his place through consistent performances and will, therefore, edge ahead of Neser for this Test match.

Here's what McDonald said

"Expecting Scott to take that spot at the Gabba. That's the running line, and he's done nothing wrong,

"His record is amazing at the moment, so he'll take his place and the assumption is that Pat does play. So you've got Cummins, Starc and Boland, with Green and Lyon to support around that."

Scott Boland has exhibited his class, scalping 21 wickets in four Test matches. However, Neser was also impressive in the recently held second Test against West Indies, as he claimed five wickets, including a three-for, at the iconic Adelaide Oval. So, it's a happy headache for the Australia management, as they have plenty of quality options to choose from.

The first Test between the two teams commences on December 17, followed by the second and third Tests in December 26 and January 4, respectively.
