COVID-19 rules out Keegan Petersen from the New Zealand series

South Africa will tour New Zealand for a two-match Test series, starting from 17th February.

A massive blow struck the Proteas ahead of the series as Cricket South Africa (CSA) informed that Keegan Petersen has been ruled out of the series after testing positive for COVID-19. The 28-year-old is replaced by Western Province batsman Zubayr Hamza.

"The number three batter is well and asymptomatic. Cricket South Africa's (CSA) medical team will keep in close contact with him to ensure his physical and mental well-being," CSA released an official statement.

After a career-changing Test series against India, Petersen emerged as the breakthrough performer for his side, amassing 276 runs in three matches at an average of 46. His replacement Hamza last featured in the South African lineup in an ODI against the Netherlands last year.

Team management will also witness a change in the series as Performance Coach Rivash Gobind and Craig Govinder are going on leave. They will be replaced by Malibongwe Maketa and Brent Martin.

South Africa has announced a 17-member squad for the New Zealand Tests. Simon Harmer will join the team in place of George Linde. Lutho Sipamla has earned a callback to the Test squad. Anrich Nortje was not considered for selection, owing to a hip injury.

Coming at the back of a historic series win vs India, the Dean Elgar-led side will aim to continue their spirits high against the Kiwis.

South Africa's updated squad: Dean Elgar (c), Temba Bavuma, Sarel Erwee, Zubayr Hamza, Simon Harmer, Marco Jansen, Keshav Maharaj, Aiden Markram, Wiaan Mulder, Lungi Ngidi, Duanne Olivier, Kagiso Rabada, Ryan Rickelton, Lutho Sipamla, Glenton Stuurman, Rassie van der Dussen, Kyle Verreynne (wk).
