The Division One of the ongoing 2022 County Championship continued with Day 3 action across four English venues on Tuesday, June 28. At the end of the third day’s play, here is a look at the high points from each of those four matches.


Surrey vs Kent

Table-toppers Surrey carried on their dominance over struggling Kent at London’s Kennington Oval. Resuming Day 3 at 147-2, Kent added another 184 runs before getting all out for 331. Enjoying a massive 342-run first-innings advantage, Surrey captain Rory Burns asked his opponents to follow on.


Kent faced the remaining 44 overs of the day in their second innings without losing a wicket. They reached 121-0 and brought down the deficit to 221 runs. Openers Joe Denly (63*) and Ben Compton (47*) will resume action on Day 4.

Northamptonshire vs Warwickshire

Warwickshire reached 396-8 before stumps on Day 3, trailing another 55 runs of hosts Northamptonshire’s 451. Opener Dom Sibley scored a well-crafted ton while wicketkeeper-batsman Michael Burgess counterattacked with a rapid 77.


Among the Northamptonshire bowlers, Jack White picked up 4-62.

Gloucestershire vs Lancashire

Lancashire resumed their first innings at 226-4 on Day 3 morning. The Dane Vilas-led side managed to take a handy 65-run lead off the back of half-centuries from Keaton Jennings, Steven Croft and Luke Wood.


After dismissing Lancashire for 402, the Gloucestershire batters lost three wickets while facing the remaining 42 overs of the day in their second innings. Unbeaten batsmen Miles Hammond and James Bracey will continue over their 34-run advantage tomorrow.

Essex vs Hampshire

High-flying Hampshire, enjoying their number 2 spot on the Division One standings, were humbled by Essex in a hard-fought tussle at Chelmsford. The James Vince-led side began their day on 35-0 in pursuit of a 299-run target.


Despite a 97-run opening stand by Felix Organ and Ian Holland, the Hampshire batters lost wickets in succession and soon found themselves buried in the rubble at 213-8, still 86 runs away from their target. 


Some lower-order resistance dragged their score to 286 as Hampshire lost the thrilling contest by 12 runs.


Essex’ Simon Harmer collected seven wickets for just 161 as he toiled away by bowling 32 off the 65 overs Hampshire faced in the final innings of the match. Remarkably, he also picked 8-46 in the first innings to complete a 15-wicket match haul.
