County Championship 2022 | Glamorgan tussle to earn hard fought win over Leicestershire

Day 4 of the fixture between Glamorgan and Leicestershire witnessed the home team securing their 2nd victory of this season at Sophia Gardens, Cardiff.

Leicestershire began the day on 158/7 with Ben Mike as the overseas batter and was joined by the captain Callum Parkinson. It was critical for both the players to string partnerships to save the match.

The duo batted around 26 overs and stitched an 88-run stand, which involved caution and delightful shots. Mike mistimed the ball off Michael Hogan and was caught by the wicket-keeper Chris Cooke for a well-made 64 off 100 balls, comprising nine fours and 1 six.

At the end of their innings, Parkinson remained unbeaten on 29 off 98 balls, with three fours and 1 six, with the team having a lead of 149 runs. The fast bowling duo Michael Neser and Michael Hogan returned with three wickets each.

Chasing 150, the team got a solid start from the openers David Lloyd and Andrew Salter. They stitched a stand of 43 runs in a matter of 8 overs, before opposition captain Parkinson bowled captain Lloyd in an attempt to hit a big shot over the deep mid-wicket boundary.

The Aussie batter, Marnus Labuschagne, had an entertaining short stay, as he was dismissed for 13 off 14 balls, with three fours. Then Sam Northeast and Andrew Salter were proficient in steering the team, but the latter was adjudged out LBW by Parkinson in the 24th over, with the team still needing 58 runs.

However, Northeast remained unbeaten on 40 off 87 and stitched partnerships with Kiran Carlson and Chris Cooke to chase down the score and secure their 2nd victory of this season.

Glamorgan will be up against Durham at Chester le Street in their next league match. On the other hand, Leicestershire will face Sussex at Grace Road. Both the fixtures will get underway from May 12.

County Championship 2022 | Rampant Pujara registers 4th 100+ score for Sussex

India's champion Test batter Cheteshwar Pujara is making it extremely hard for the national selectors for the upcoming Test match against England with his rich vein of form for Sussex in the ongoing season of County Championship. Pujara, on Saturday, peeled off his 4th three-figure score in as many fixtures during the 2nd innings of the Division II match between Sussex and Middlesex. The Saurashtra batsman looked at his imperious best against the Shaheen Shah Afridi-led Middlesex attack as he painted the Hove Cricket with sumptuous and, at times, authoritative stroke play. Pujara, a 95-Test veteran, was dropped from the red-ball set-up following a prolonged lean patch after India's series defeat in South Africa. While he made valuable contributions in Test victories in Australia and England, consistent failures in the 1st innings and lack of 100s since January 2019 hurt the Saurashtra cricketer. As a result, Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane were finally shown the door by the selectors after the defeat in South Africa. Now that Pujara is back among runs, it will be interesting if the national selectors return to the Test veteran for the all-important final Test against England. Hanuma Vihari has waited for long enough and deserves to get an extended opportunity at the No.3 spot, but given the glut of runs Pujara is churning out, he is making it impossible for the selectors to overlook him. India, who are currently leading by 2-1 in the Pataudi Trophy, will play the decider at Edgbaston between July 01-05. The Test was supposed to take place at Old Trafford last September but was eventually postponed due to a Covid outbreak in the Indian camp.
