County Championship 2022 Division I | Northamptonshire save game riding on Young’s 96

Northamptonshire refused to get bundled out and survived the day’s play to draw the home game against Yorkshire. With the pitch not depicting any signs of deterioration, the home side’s batters had no demons to counter. However, the result has brought Yorkshire’s late declaration under the scanner.

The tourists were led by a huge 452 runs at Tea on Day 3, but they declared their innings only after having 498 runs on the board, giving themselves about 120 overs to bowl out the opposition.

Kiwi opener Will Young was the star of Northants’ resistance. His patient knock of 96 came off 241 deliveries as he held the fort for more than eight long hours.

Resuming the day on 56/0, the home team lost three quick wickets to get reduced to 79/3. First, Haris Rauf sent back captain Ricardo Vasconcelos on 29, then came the prized wicket of Emilio Gay on nought, and Saif Zaib followed suit as he fell to Matthew Revis.

The third wicket brought Rob Keogh to the pitch as he joined Young in the resurrection process. The pair put on 99 runs for the fourth wicket before Keogh fell to George Hill.

When Young returned to the pavilion after missing out on a deserving century, the scoreboard read 236/6. His wicket ignited hopes in Yorkshire’s camp, only to be dashed by Lewis McManus (62*) and Matthew Kelly (42).

Matthew Revis was the top bowler for Yorkshire as he returned with three wickets. Haris Rauf had two to his name. However, the visitors did not have the bowling to land the finishing blow.
