County Championship 2022 | Brett's resilience put Worcestershire in strong position against Sussex

Worcestershire and Sussex are up against each other in the third round of County Championship 2022 at New Road, Worcester. Worcestershire are sixth, while Sussex are languishing at the bottom of the table.

After winning the toss, Worcestershire opted to bat first, which emerged as a good decision at the end of Day 1, having garnered a total of 338 with a loss of five wickets.

The opening partnership between Ed Pollock and Jake Libby of 85 came at a smashing rate of five. Although Libby could contribute only 11, it was Pollock who was sensational with his breathtaking shots all around the park.

A brilliant spell by the Sussex captain Tom Haines saw both the openers depart in quick succession. Pollock's quickfire innings came to an end of 77 off 74 balls. At no. 3 and no. 4 came Azhar Ali and Jack Haynes, who were ordinary with their performances and scored 20 and 8, respectively.

After these wickets, momentum shifted to the batting side as Brett Oliveira, and Ed Barnard came to the crease. Brett remained unbeaten on 106(230), and Barnard was terrific with his gritty knock of 75(144). Both these batters stitched a partnership of 166 runs that might help the hosts take first-innings lead and crucial points.

Along with Brett, Ben Cox looked solid as ever and is unbeaten on 25(60).

Moving onto Day 2, Sussex are in dire need of wickets to make a comeback in this fixture. On the other hand, Worcestershire will look to get somewhere around 450 on the board with a strong tail behind.

Brief scores on Day 1: Worcestershire- 338/5 (Brett Oliveira 106*, Ed Pollock 77, Tom Haines 3/46)
