Cleaver fever in Super Smash as Dane hits the first century of 2021-22 season

Dane Cleaver of Central Districts was on fire in the second game of the Super Smash 2021-22 as he hit the first century of the season, making an unbeaten 114 to guide his team past Otago Volts to their first victory.

Cleaver, who came to bat after opener Bayley Wiggins was out early on in the innings, started to tee off right from the start. While Cleaver was going all bonkers, his partner at the other end, Greg Hay remained calm and preserved the wicket as the duo added 156 for the second wicket.

This is the second-highest second-wicket partnership in Super Smash history after the 188 runs by Niel Broom and Brendon McCullum for Otago against Northern Districts in 2012.

Cleaver completed his hundred, the first-ever in T20 cricket in only 48 balls. He has reached his fifty in 24 balls as well. In his knock of 114*, the 29-year-old hit 14 fours and four sixes at the University Oval in Dunedin.

Post Hay’s wicket, three other wickets fell quickly, but it was of no use as Cleaver remained on the crease to finish the job.

Earlier in the day, after winning the toss and deciding to bat first, Otago, riding on the back of Hamish Rutherford’s 82 off just 47 balls, made a total of 184-4 in their 20 overs.

Shreyas Iyer becomes first Indian to hit century and fifty on Test debut

Shreyas Iyer, the Indian middle-order batter, who was making his debut in Test cricket in the first Test of the two-match series against New Zealand, has etched his name in the history books by becoming the first Indian to hit a century and a half-century in two innings of the debut Test match. Iyer achieved this feat after getting past the fifty run mark in India’s second innings in the first Test at Kanpur. He has also helped India get a crucial 200 run lead, which is important in the context that the Indian team were struggling at 51-5 at one point with all the main batters back in the hut. The 26-year-old then struck important partnerships with Ravichandran Ashwin and Wriddhiman Saha to get India past 150 on the fourth day. At the time of writing this, the Mumbai batter was batting on 60* and had put on a 59 run partnership for the seventh wicket with Saha. Earlier in the game, Iyer had hit a century on debut in the first innings and had become the 16ty Indian batter to achieve that feat. Iyer was drafted into the playing XI only after KL Rahul was withdrawn from the squad at the last moment due to calf strain.

Bangladesh spinner Taijul Islam was on a roll against Pakistan in the first innings of the first Test in Chattogram after he scalped six wickets out of the first nine to push the visiting team on the back foot. Pakistan had begun the proceedings well in reply to the home side’s 330 as openers Abid Ali and Abdullah Shafique struck 146 for the first wicket before Shafique was trapped in front of the stumps by Taijul for 52. Shafique’s departure saw wickets falling at regular intervals as the left-arm spinner just ripped through the Pakistan batting line up and they were soon reduced to 217/6 to and were left tottering at 257/9. None of the batters, barring Abid and Shafique, got into the groove and the Pakistan side witnessed a batting collapse. Taijul’s dismissals included the wickets of Abid, Shafique, Azhar Ali, Fawad Alam, Hasan Ali and Nauman Ali during the course. Earlier, Bangladesh put up 330 in the first innings on the board, courtesy a hundred from Liton Das and a well-compiled 91 from Mushfiqur Rahim. For Pakistan, it was Hasan Ali who was the pick of the bowlers after he bagged a fifer.

Earlier, Bangladesh rode on a century from Liton Das and 91 from Mushfiqur Rahim to out 330 on the board. Pacer Hasan Ali returned with a five-wicket haul for Pakistan in the first innings. The two teams are battling it out in a two-match Test series. The second fixture will be held in Dhaka from December 4.

Tim Southee reaches 50 Test wickets against India, becomes second New Zealander to do so

New Zealand fast bowler Tim Southee became the second fast bowler after legendary Richard Hadlee to take 50 Test wickets against India. He reached this milestone by picking up two wickets in India’s second innings in the ongoing first Test at Kanpur. Southee, who is known for his ability to swing the ball at any wicket, was at his lethal best in his very first spell, as he got Shreyas Iyer to nick the ball. Unfortunately, there was no first slip to take the catch. However, that prompted skipper Kane Williamson to get two slips and a short gully in the next over and the second slip which was placed way ahead of the mark and was wearing a helmet as protection took a great catch to dismiss Mayank Agarwal. Agarwal defend an in swinger with hard hands and as a result, the ball became airborne and Tom Latham at the second slip did the rest. In the same over, he trapped Jadeja with an angled delivery from around the wicket and got him out Leg Before Wicket in a similar fashion to the first innings. Southee now has 51 wickets to his name against India in only his 10th match. James Anderson of England has the most Test wickets against India. He has picked up 133 wickets in 34 matches.
