As England cricket is going through an overhaul, permanent replacements of Joe Root and Chris Silverwood are yet to be booked.
While there is not much fight for the captaincy position with Ben Stokes emerging as a frontrunner, many prominent names are racing to take over the charge as the head coach.
Since Rob Key was appointed the Managing Director of England Men's Cricket, many former English greats have been pushing their favourite candidates for the role. The list continues to grow, with Monty Panesar throwing another name in the ring.
The former left-arm spinner wants England to consider bringing Andy Flower back into the setup as the Zimbabwean has proven credentials on his resume. Flower coached England for five years between 2009-14, helping the Three Lions top the Test charts.
"When Andy Flower was England coach, it was the only time in the history of English cricket the team gained number 1 Test status. IMO bring him back, he will know how to build an English team and bring success to England," Panesar wrote on Twitter.
Former England batter Nick Compton also echoed Panesar's views and expected Flower to bring the order back to the side if he came on board.
"Long-term, Andy Flower had huge success with England. Okay, things didn't perhaps finish the way he would have liked, but he has gone away to franchise cricket and is now wiser and older. He is a ruthless individual, a tough man who would not be afraid to call things out, make some of the changes and bring order back," Compton said as quoted by The Mirror.
After moving away from international cricket, Flower opted for the franchise route, with this latest stint being Lucknow Super Giants' head coach in IPL 2022.
Although the 53-year-old is touted to fit the bill perfectly, his appointment seems highly unlikely, with other candidates, namely Ricky Ponting and Mahela Jayawardene, already leading the race.
