BREAKING | KKR vs RCB postponed as Varun Chakravarthy & Sandeep Warrier return Covid positive

The 30th match of the Indian Premier League between Kolkata Knight Riders and Royal Challengers Bangalore which was scheduled to be held on Monday, 3 May, has been postponed due to Covid-19 scare in the KKR camp, several media reports have claimed. KKR players Varun Chakravarthy and Sandeep Warrier are reported to be the players to have contracted the virus, while the rest of the team has tested negative.

Australian journalist Peter Lalor had initially broken the news over Twitter that the match has been called off after one player tested positive in the KKR team.

Right after the break, Boria Majumdar also stated that only one player had contracted the virus but a BCCI official confirmed to news agency ANI under anonymity that players Varun Chakravarthy and Sandeep Warrier are the ones who are Covid positive. The Board for Control of Cricket in India are said to have been doing everything they can to manage the situation.

Reports have stated that two KKR players Varun Chakravarthy and Sandeep Warrier had gone to the hospital and might have contracted the virus from there. BCCI regulations mandate that there needs to be a separate bubble window that needs to be created for these kinds of hospital visits.

At the moment, according to the BCCI SOP, 'close contacts of the positive players' need to return three negative tests in the next six days before joining the team again.

This is a developing story. More details are awaited.

IPL 2021 | PBKS vs DC: What Experts said as Mayank Agarwal's brilliance goes in vain

It was a thoroughly convincing all-round performance from the Delhi Capitals as they thrashed the Punjab Kings by 7 wickets in the 29th match of the competition to go atop the points table having acquired 12 points from 8 encounters. Riding on a good bowling show and breezy knocks from Shikhar Dhawan and Prithvi Shaw, the Capitals chased the target down with 14 deliveries to spare. Punjab Kings needed early wickets to defend the score of 166. However that wasn’t to be as Prithvi Shaw again got them off to a brisk start. The stylish right-handed batsman played some delightful shots en route to 39 of 24 deliveries which included three fours and three sixes. It was strokeplay of the highest order as Prithvi and Dhawan shared 63 runs stand in just over 6 overs. It was Harpreet Brar who undid Prithvi Shaw with a terrific delivery turning away from him. Punjab Kings would have hoped that this was the beginning of a downfall but that wasn’t to be. Shikhar Dhawan took the onus on hismelf and shared a 48 runs stand with Steve Smith which got DC closer to the victory target. Dhawan struck some exceptional shots and went onto acclaim the Orange Cap yet again en route to yet another well-deserved half-century. The southpaw remained unbeaten on 69 of 47 deliveries and made sure that he took his side over the finishing line. Rishabh Pant also struck some lusty blows before departing but by then, DC were sensing victory. Eventually Shimron Hetmyer smashed some big blows and remained unbeaten on 16 of a mere 4 deliveries to seal the match for the Capitals. Earlier in the day it was Pant who won the toss and put Punjab in. Prabhsimran Singh and Mayank Agarwal came out to open the innings. Mayank replaced Rahul in the XI and also led the side in his absence. The opening partnership was brought to an end pretty early after Simran Singh smashed a six of Ishant Sharma. Chris Gayle looked in good touch but was dismissed by a full toss shaping away from Gayle. He was beaten for pace and movement and the stumps went for a cartwheel. Mayank Agarwal didnt face enough deliveries in the first twelve overs as wickets kept falling at the other end. Dawid Malan shared a good stand with Mayank but the former found it difficult to get going. He struggled his way to a run ball 26. Mayank Agarwal after spending considerable amount of time in the middle suddenly went berserk in the last few overs. He took the DC bowlers by the scruff of their neck and belted them all around the Narendra Modi Stadium. He smashed 23 runs in the final over including a couple of fours and sixes in the last three deliveries falling just a run short of a well-deserved century. Despite his individual brilliance, the score didn’t prove to be enough as Punjab suffered their 5th loss of the season. Captain’s Viewpoints Delhi Capitals skipper Rishabh Pant showered his praises on the whole for their all-round brilliance. Pant felt that with Dhawan and Prithvi Shaw getting them off to flying starts in most of the matches, DC looks in good stead. “I think Shikhy bhai and Prithvi gave us a very good start, that's why the innings looked much better. The first innings it was really gripping. The way they started was commendable. It feels so good when you have a great start each and every match with a mixture of youth and experience,” Pant said. He further explained that most of the things inside the team seems very sorted and that is the reason they are at the top of the points table with six victories. Leading a team loaded with experienced players, Pant is utilising the opportunities of getting help from the senior campaigners. He also lauded the bowling unit of DC who has been simply phenomenal in the tournament so far. “You can see that everyone is doing so well around them. Most things are sorted out but we need to try out a few options for the Kolkata matches. The competition in the team is very good. When you see, there is a lot of gun bowling that we have. I'm enjoying everyday, using my experience, using the seniors around me. We are trying to make an environment where everyone feels good,” Dhawan said. Having led the Punjab Kings in the absence of KL Rahul, Mayank Agarwal gave an update on his injury and hoped that he will be back soon fit and fine. Despite a sensational knock Punjab Kings had to go down. Mayank said that he would have easily traded a win for a lesser score. However there was no denying the fact that he was completely superb to get his side to a competitive total in the end. “KL Rahul is going for a surgery and hopefully he should be back. Would've liked two points but I guess we were about 10 short on that wicket. And the kind of powerplay they had we really had to scrap and fight. One batsman has to bat through, that was my plan. It was my day, I took that responsibility,” Agarwal said at the post-match presentation ceremony. Punjab Kings didn’t get enough runs in the death overs and Mayank rued the fact stating that he would have cherished two points more than the 99. He also lauded Harpreet Brar wh0 followed his match-wimning spell against RCB with a wicket of his first delivery. “Unfortunately we didn't get too many in the middle overs, even though we finished well. Would have loved two points more than anything else. But it is what it is. We have to shut this off, turn up next game and do better. Managing the ups and downs is what captaincy's all about. Kudos to Harpreet who showed up for us today and last game as well, he also hit a crucial boundary. We need to keep at it and click as a team,” Rahul said. Voice of Cricket, Harsha Bhogle hailed Mayank Agarwal earlier in the day after his special knock of an unbeaten 99. He looked in sensational touch and Bhogle said that in the context of the gamem the 99 was much more than a century. He also lauded Shikhar Dhawan for his match-winning knock. Remaining unbeaten on 69 of 47 deliveries, Dhawan delivered the killer punch for his franchise. Renowned journalist Ayaz Menon rued the fact that despite the brilliance of Mayank Agarwal, Punjab Kings had to end on the losing side. Following the completion of his knock, Menon had lauded him for taking his side to a competitive score. Senior Executive Director of Aaj Tak Vikrant Gupta criticised Punjab Kings’s decision to open with Prabhsimran Singh despite having the No 1 T20I batsman in the world Dawid Malan in their ranks.

IPL 2021 | PBKS vs DC: Hits and Flops as dominant Capitals trounce dismal Kings

A valiant 99 not out from Mayank Agarwal could not prevent a thumping victory for the Delhi Capitals and the Punjab Kings sunk further in the ongoing edition of the IPL. Chasing a modest target of 166 runs on a relatively easier surface to bat on at the Narendra Modi Stadium, the Capitals came hunting the new ball bowlers once again as the opening pair of Shikhar Dhawan and Prithvi Shaw got going once again. The Capitals have emerged as a side to beat in the ongoing edition of the IPL but on the other hand, the Kings have suffered due to lack of intent in the early part of the tournament followed by inconsistency in both batting and bowling departments. Here, we’ll analyse the best and the worst of the performances from the game between the Punjab Kings and the Delhi Capitals. Hits Mayank Agarwal Mayank Agarwal had missed the Kings’ last game due to an injury concern and little did he know that KL Rahul will be diagnosed with acute appendicitis and that he will have to take the mettle of leading an underperforming Kings side. KL Rahul has not only been their skipper but also their best batsman for some season in the tournament and hence his loss could have been huge for Kings’ prospect in the game. Mayank Agarwal had a task on his hand and also the start was ominous from the Kings batting line up with the rookie Prabhsimran Singh wasting too many deliveries upfront. The Kings were so horrible in the powerplay that could muster only 18 runs in the first four overs before Chris Gayle attempted to break the shackles. Mayank did not get to face a lot of balls in the powerplay (9) and he too could not get going berserk in those opportunities. After Rabada got the better of Gayle, Rishabh Pant employed the off-spin of Lalit Yadav to counter Dawid Malan. Instead, he offered two half volleys to Mayank, but thankfully for the Capitals, only one of them was dispatched to the boundary. Agarwal could not find a boundary for 14 balls after the one he hit against Yadav but he kept the scoreboard ticking with quick singles and doubles. However, as Malan departed after a sluggish innings, the onus was completely on Mayank’sshoulder if the Kings were to have any chance of reaching a big score. The turn round happened in the 15th over when Rabada got lured into test his throat and pitched the ball short. Mayank pounded on the opportunity and deposited the ball over the square leg fence to make it a 12-run over. The next over from Sharma turned out to be more productive than the previous over by Rabada as Mayank first nudged a ball going down the leg side for a boundary to reach his fifty and then smacked him over long-off to announce the end of his struggle at the crease. He doubled down on his method in the next over as well as finding exquisite placement on the first two deliveries off Axar Patel. Avesh Khan clogged back the momentum in the 18th over giving away just four runs and eliminating Shahrukh Khan. The Kings were just 132/5 at the end of the 18th over albeit Mayank batted with a strike rate of 148 runs per 100 balls. Mayank had to ensure the Kings reached a fighting total and he welcomed Rabada with a brutal hit over long-off. The pacer was successful in limiting the boundary to only the six on the first ball but could not Agarwal from making it an 11-run over. Then, it was Avesh Khan against Mayank in a near-showdown and the Kings stand-in skipper pluenderded 23 runs in the last over to make sure the Kings reach a safe target. Agarwal could not bring up his century and fell short at unbeaten 99 but he did not fall short of leading by example and brought up the second-highest score for a captain on debut in the IPL after Sanju Samson’s century earlier this year. Axar Patel The Capitals fielded a playing XI including three pacers while the spin department was in the hands of Axar Patel and Lalit Yadav. Pant bowled one over of Marcus to get a leeway of not having to bowl four overs of Yadav while all other bowlers such as Kagiso Rabada, Ishant Sharma and Avesh Khan bowled their complete quota over overs. All of the pacers bowled with economy rates in excess of nine runs per over but the Capitals were successful in preventing the Kings from running away with the game. The role of a squeezer was well done by Axar Patel with his tidy, stump to stump bowling. Although he got under the radar of Mayank Agarwal but showed good signs of control while bowling under pressure to yield only 21 runs from his four overs. Also, he pulled a strong punch on the Kings batting line up when he ended the misery of Dawid Malan just when he started looking nearing his best. His departure set the Kings back in the middle phase and although Mayank Agarwal batted heroically in the end overs, the Kings could not post a score that the Capitals could have come under pressure while chasing. Shikhar Dhawan Shikhar Dhawan has been batting with remarkable form and control in the IPL starting last season and the story has not changed one bit in the ongoing season, except that he has been the junior partner in the opening partnership with Prithvi Shaw. Shaw has been going all guns blazing but that has not stopped Dhawan from taking the game head-on in a calculative manner and picking his targets and small goals. Chasing 167 runs against the Kings, the Capitals were already on a roll with Shaw going berserk once again, but Dhawan was the strong man standing resolutely at the other end. However, when Mohammed Shami offered him two opportunities in the fourth over, he pounced on both of them, first with a crunching punch off the back foot past point and then through a drive through the off side on the last ball. The Capitals were mooting along at 63/0 by the end of powerplay but Shaw departed right at the start of the seventh over. The next man in Steve Smith has been in a dominant position with the bat as Shaw and Dhawan was aware of the task of transforming himself into an enforcer to support Smith and keeping the scoreboard ticking. He got stuck into leg spinner Ravi Bishnoi and took him for a couple of six and boundary to suck the life out of the Kings bowling attack. He remained not out and led the team with another win in the 14th edition of the IPL and he is capitalizing on his best form and not wasting it one but by getting carried away with it. Flops Dawid Malan Dawid Malan came into the IPL 2021 with the tag of being the number one batsman in the international T20s attached with him. However, his credentials did not fit well with the team combination at the Punjab Kings who could not give up on either Chris Gayle or Nicholas Pooran. However, KL Rahul’s medical condition turned out to be a blessing in disguise for the left-hander in the game against the Delhi Capitals. However, he was not helped by the Kings team management as he was held back to the number four position behind Prabhsimran Singh and Gayle and could come out to bat only in the last over of the powerplay. Rishabh Pant had fresh memories of Englishmen struggling against the spin of Axar Patel and R Ashwin and used the same tactic to put the squeeze on Malan and did not allow him any breathing space. He was struggling to time the ball and was not going anywhere with just 11 runs from the first 17 balls but found room against Ishant Sharma and attempted to break free. By the time, Axar Patel returned with his second spell, Malan thought of taking the game to the left armer and lost his leg stump after any abysmal innings that derailed any chance of Kings’ resurgence in the game. Mohammed Shami Mohammed Shami has returned to competitive cricket after a long time in the IPL itself and it looks like he is far away from his best rhythm. In the game against the Capitals, he had to get the early breakthrough as otherwise, the dominant opening batsmen of the Capitals would have run away with the game. Shami was erratic in his line and length and allowed Dhawan easy boundary options early on and conceded as many as 24 runs by the end of the fourth over. He lost Mayank’s confidence and was brought back only in the 15th over as the Kings banked on Pant’s approach of taking a risk and hence getting opportunities to get him out and come back in the game. Shami faltered once again and both Pant and Dhawan took 13 runs off him to stamp Capitals’ authority on the game. The Capitals marched on to a seamless win over the Punjab Kings and consolidate their position at the top of the points table with six wins out of eight matches played so far. The Kings sunk further on the points table with only three wins in an equal number of matches to that of the Capitals, and with KL Rahul set to miss at least the next few matches, the journey looks doomed and gloomy for the Kings with a revamped name.

IPL 2021 | RR vs SRH: Hits and Flops as Jos Buttler piles on the woes of perturbed Sunrisers

Jos Buttler had been struggling to find the peach of his form in the Indian Premier League so far. Just before this game, he had said, “We've played well in phases.” But in today’s game, not only did the team play well in all departments of the game to beat Sunrisers Hyderabad by a huge margin of 55 runs but Buttler himself was on a roll, scoring his maiden T20 century. After being put in to bat first, Rajasthan with the help of Buttler’s century (124 runs) scored a huge total of 220 runs in their quota of 20 overs. Apart from Buttler, skipper Sanju Samson batted well for his 33 balls 48. Chasing that, Hyderabad tried to start aggressively with 57 runs in the powerplay without a loss. Just after the first dismissal, when Mustafizur Rahman bowled Manish Pandey, the team lost control and never came back, eventually ending up with 165-8 in the 20 overs. Kartik Tyagi, who was playing his first game o the season was brilliant with the ball alongside The Fizz Rahman. Apart from heroes, this game had villains too, and all of that shall be covered in the section Hits and Flops Hits Jos Buttler The Englishman after playing, probably the best T20 innings of his life, joked, saying, “I finally will have Alastair Cook stop telling me that he has got one T20 hundred more than me.” But the innings was more than just another hundred, it was a lesson for anyone trying to learn how you build a T20 inning. When he started his innings, the 31-year-old was playing exactly how he had played so far in this year’s league, that is struggling to time the ball. At one stage he was eight from 13 and then at another stage, he was 35 from 33. Buy having played the 33 balls, the wicket-keeper batsman started to tee off little by little. His shots started connecting and he was naturally finding the gaps. In the next 31 balls, the Somerset batsman hit 89 runs, including his second fifty coming off just 17 balls. In his knock of 124, the Taunton born hit 11 fours and eight humongous sixes. It was Buttler who made all the difference, making sure that the fifth bowler, who was actually a combination of bowler, goes for 63 runs. Mustafizur Rahman The Fizz as he is called did exactly what he is known for, mix up the length and the speed. It was him in his second over that Pandye was bowled around his legs on the very first ball after the powerplay. His cutters and slower ones got the batsman in a spot of bother and as a result, he was able to pick up three wickets and went for just 20 overs in his quota of four overs. In fact, at the time when all other Royals bowlers were being taken to the cleaners by Bairstow and Pandey, he went for only 10 runs in his first two. The class of Fizz is being displayed from the fact that in the seven games that he has played so far, the Bangladeshi left-arm speedster has picked up eight wickets and apart from the first game, has never gone for more than 40 runs in any game. Kartik Tyagi Playing only his first game of the season, the 20-year-old Tyagi was more than just on the money. The speedster was not only bowling speedy bouncers, well directed at the shoulders and the head of the batsmen but was also able to pull in the odd yorker and bowl at the good length at the start of the inning, showing exactly why he should have been picked up at the very instant he was available for selection post his injury at the start of the season. The Hapur born was bowled three overs at the stretch and it was only in the third over that he was taken for 16 runs. In the first two overs, Tyagi, was pacy, bouncy and into the minds and bodies of the batters, terrorising them, making them commit mistakes, just unlucky that he didn’t get the wicket. The Uttar Pradesh and India U-19 representative got the wicket as well, that too of the SRH captain Kane Williamson, who tried to take on his bouncer, but holed out in the deep to Chris Morris. The youngster made an impact, one that will not only guarantee him a second chance but many more in the games to come. Flops Kane Williamson Given the captaincy of the side midway, it wasn’t really great start for the Kiwi man, who failed both as a batsman and as a skipper in this game. While he wasn’t really brilliant with the bowling changes, the field planning wasn’t that great either. The Blackcaps skipper didn’t look himself at all and it was evident on his face in the field as well. The was worry, frustration and even a slight bit of anger when he got out while batting and these are not the expressions that we associate with Williamson. His innings of 20 runs was basically a struggle throughout which was ended by Tyagi. Maybe there are some unresolved issues in the dressing room, or maybe the bowlers conceded way too much for him to handle in the very first game, but whatever that it might be, it cost the team a game and if Sunrisers are looking to get back, Williamson need to be back at being the refrigerator of a cool man that he is and need to pull out those ideas from his hats. Sandeep Sharma The Delhi wicket is a massacre ground for bowlers no doubt, but sometimes the bowlers drag on just a little bit more. And bowling a no-ball is criminal. Sandeep Sharma was not only criminal bowling the no-ball, but he also committed the mistake of keeping it full to Buttler. In his last two overs, the Punjab bowler went for 17 and 24 runs respectively, both the times hammered by Buttler, whom he did eventually get outplayed down. In total, the 27-year-old conceded 50 runs in his quota of four overs, putting a lot of pressure on his fellow bowlers and skipper Williamson. With this performance of his, he might have risked his chances of playing the second game as well. While Sunrisers are still with just one win from seven games and lying at the bottom o the table, they would have another opportunity at the Arun Jaitley Stadium when they take on Chennai Super Kings on May 7. The Royals would also be up against the same opponent at the same venue but on May 5 only.

IPL 2021 | Trevor Bayliss opens up on sacking of David Warner, backs experienced Kane Williamson

Addressing a very big call of dropping David Warner as the captain of the side before the game against the Rajasthan Royals, the head coach of the Sunrisers Hyderabad Trevor Bayliss said that the decision was taken in order to try various new options. He said that the decision was a tough one to make by the management but they wanted to get their campaign back on track. “Obviously very difficult. The guy that had so much success for the team, but that’s the way we wanted to go. We are trying to get different combinations working for us,” Bayliss said in the post-match press conference. After facing the exit door from the captaincy of the team, Warner was axed from the playing XI as well with Kane Williamson getting the leadership position. Bayliss was asked if a change of captain in mid of a season will not augur well for the men in orange and what effects will the absence of Warner make on the Sunrisers’ fortunes going forward. Bayliss said that not having Warner the batsman will be a huge setback but a new leader in the form of Williamson will not be a tough task as he has had the experience of leading the side for two years and also the New Zealand international teams. "Yes, very challenging without David as a player and a new captain. Look, I don't think there would be too much of a problem there. Kane has been the captain of the team before and obviously, in the last 2 or 3 years he has the experience of captaining New Zealand,” Bayliss added. Kane Williamson’s start as the full-time skipper of the Sunrisers Hyderabad did not take off on a pleasing note as the team suffered another heavy loss against the Rajasthan Royals.
