IPL 2021 | RR vs SRH: Hits and Flops as Jos Buttler piles on the woes of perturbed Sunrisers

Jos Buttler had been struggling to find the peach of his form in the Indian Premier League so far. Just before this game, he had said, “We've played well in phases.” But on Sunday, not only did the team play well in all departments of the game to beat Sunrisers Hyderabad by a huge margin of 55 runs but Buttler himself was on a roll, scoring his maiden T20 century.

After being put in to bat first, Rajasthan with the help of Buttler’s century (124 runs) scored a huge total of 220 runs in their quota of 20 overs. Apart from Buttler, skipper Sanju Samson batted well for his 33-ball 48. Chasing that, Hyderabad tried to start aggressively with  57 runs in the powerplay without a loss.

Just after the first dismissal, when Mustafizur Rahman bowled Manish Pandey, the team lost control and never came back, eventually ending up with 165/8 in the 20 overs. Kartik Tyagi, who was playing his first game of the season was brilliant with the ball alongside 'The Fizz' Rahman. Apart from heroes, this game had villains too, and all of that shall be covered in the section Hits and Flops.

Hits

Jos Buttler

The Englishman after playing, probably the best T20 innings of his life, joked, saying, “I finally will have Alastair Cook stop telling me that he has got one T20 hundred more than me.” But the knock was more than just another hundred, it was a lesson for anyone trying to learn how you build a T20 inning.

When he started his innings, the 31-year-old was playing exactly how he had played so far in this year’s league, that is struggling to time the ball. At one stage he was eight from 13 and then at another stage, he was 35 from 33. Having played 33 balls, the wicket-keeper batsman started to tee off little by little. His shots started connecting and he was naturally finding the gaps.

In the next 31 balls, the Somerset batsman hit 89 runs, including his second fifty coming off just 17 balls. In his knock of 124, the Taunton born hit 11 fours and eight humongous sixes. It was Buttler who made all the difference, making sure that the fifth bowler, who was actually a combination of bowler, goes for 63 runs.

Mustafizur Rahman

The Fizz as he is called did exactly what he is known for, mix up the length and the speed. It was him in his second over that Pandey was cleaned up around his legs on the very first ball after the powerplay. His cutters and slower ones got the batsman in a spot of bother and as a result, he was able to pick up three wickets and went for just 20 overs in his quota of four overs.

In fact, at the time when all other Royals bowlers were being taken to the cleaners by Bairstow and Pandey, he went for only 10 runs in his first two. The class of Fizz is being displayed from the fact that in the seven games that he has played so far, the Bangladeshi left-arm speedster has picked up eight wickets.

Kartik Tyagi

Playing only his first game of the season, the 20-year-old Tyagi was more than just on the money. The speedster was not only bowling speedy bouncers, well directed at the shoulders and the head of the batsmen but was also able to pull in the odd yorker and bowl at the good length at the start of the innings, showing exactly why he should have been picked up at the very instant he was available for selection post his injury at the start of the season.

The Hapur born was bowled three overs at the stretch and it was only in the third over that he was taken for 16 runs. In the first two overs, Tyagi, was pacy, bouncy and into the minds and bodies of the batters, terrorising them, making them commit mistakes, just unlucky that he didn’t get the wicket.

The Uttar Pradesh and India U-19 representative got the wicket as well, that too of the SRH captain Kane Williamson, who tried to take on his bouncer, but holed out in the deep to Chris Morris. The youngster made an impact, one that will not only guarantee him a second chance but many more in the games to come.

Flops

Kane Williamson

Given the captaincy of the side midway, it wasn’t really great start for the Kiwi man, who failed both as a batsman and as a skipper in this game. While he wasn’t really brilliant with the bowling changes, the field planning wasn’t that great either.

The Blackcaps skipper didn’t look as himself at all and it was evident on his face in the field as well. The was worry, frustration and even a slight bit of anger when he got out while batting and these are not the expressions that we associate with Williamson. His innings of 20 runs was basically a struggle throughout which was ended by Tyagi.

Maybe there are some unresolved issues in the dressing room, or maybe the bowlers conceded way too much for him to handle in the very first game, but whatever it might be, it cost the team a game and if Sunrisers are looking to get back, Williamson needs to be back at being the refrigerator of a cool man that he is and need to pull out those ideas from his hats.

Sandeep Sharma

The Delhi wicket is a massacre ground for bowlers no doubt, but sometimes the bowlers drag on just a little bit more. And bowling a no-ball is crime. Sandeep Sharma not only bowled a no-ball, but he also committed the mistake of keeping it full to Buttler.

In his last two overs, the Punjab bowler went for 17 and 24 runs respectively, both the times hammered by Buttler, whom he did eventually get outplayed down. In total, the 27-year-old conceded 50 runs in his quota of four overs, putting a lot of pressure on his fellow bowlers and skipper Williamson.  With this performance of his, he might have risked his chances of playing the second game as well.

While Sunrisers are still with just one win from seven games and lying at the bottom of the table, they would have another opportunity at the Arun Jaitley Stadium when they take on Chennai Super Kings on May 7. The Royals would also be up against the same opponent at the same venue but on May 5 only.

IPL 2021 | Trevor Bayliss opens up on sacking of David Warner, backs experienced Kane Williamson

Addressing a very big call of dropping David Warner as the captain of the side before the game against the Rajasthan Royals, the head coach of the Sunrisers Hyderabad Trevor Bayliss said that the decision was taken in order to try various new options. He said that the decision was a tough one to make by the management but they wanted to get their campaign back on track. “Obviously very difficult. The guy that had so much success for the team, but that’s the way we wanted to go. We are trying to get different combinations working for us,” Bayliss said in the post-match press conference. After facing the exit door from the captaincy of the team, Warner was axed from the playing XI as well with Kane Williamson getting the leadership position. Bayliss was asked if a change of captain in mid of a season will not augur well for the men in orange and what effects will the absence of Warner make on the Sunrisers’ fortunes going forward. Bayliss said that not having Warner the batsman will be a huge setback but a new leader in the form of Williamson will not be a tough task as he has had the experience of leading the side for two years and also the New Zealand international teams. "Yes, very challenging without David as a player and a new captain. Look, I don't think there would be too much of a problem there. Kane has been the captain of the team before and obviously, in the last 2 or 3 years he has the experience of captaining New Zealand,” Bayliss added. Kane Williamson’s start as the full-time skipper of the Sunrisers Hyderabad did not take off on a pleasing note as the team suffered another heavy loss against the Rajasthan Royals.

IPL 2021 | RR vs SRH: What Experts said after Jos Buttler brings thunderstorm in Delhi

Rajasthan Royals etched a win against Sunrisers Hyderabad by 55 runs in Delhi after restricting them to 165/8 in 20 overs. Chasing 221, SRH started off well after Manish Pandey and Jonny Bairstow out 57 runs on the board for the first wicket. But Pandey’s departure for 31 off 20 saw a fall of wickets at regular intervals for Hyderabad and they were soon reduced to 105/4 with the new skipper Kane Williamson back in the hut. No batsman was able to take the onus of himself as SRH failed to steady the ship and eventually suffered the defeat. Left-handed bowler Mustafizur Rahman returned with three wickets for 20 runs in four overs to rattle the Sunrisers’ batting line up. Earlier, Jos Buttler was on carnage against the SRH bowlers as he struck his maiden T20 hundred. Buttler scored 124 off 64 balls before getting out to Sandeep Sharma in the penultimate over. The right-handed wicket-keeper batsman started off the innings in a slow and steady manner but picked up the pace and hammered the bowlers all around the park once he got his eye in. Apart from Buttler, captain Sanju Samson also chipped in with 48 off 33 during the course. This is the third win for RR in 7 matches and they are now placed at number five spot in the points table. Captain’s corner SRH’s new skipper Kane Williamson admitted that it was a tough day for his side at the office and credited Rajasthan for their performance. “A tough day. A very competitive total from RR. It was Jos' day and he was outstanding. With the bat you do need to get a few things to go your way and when you're losing wickets it makes it all the more harder to chase 220. We have had a lot of challenges over the last three weeks, but we need to make small adjustments and put in improved performances. Jos and Sanju were key, so we wanted Rashid to bowl as many deliveries as possible against them. It is a bit of character building for us, so we just need to swallow it and move ahead. This game can change quickly and it is a game of fine lines. We just need to be clear of what we want to do each day. [On leaving the fifth bowler for the end] It wasn't the initial plan, but we wanted to use our resources and it was a decision we had to make. Those are the risks you need to take and not let the game just unfold,” he said. Williamson further hailed RR for their batting performance and said that it was an exceptional batting from the side. “Exceptional batting from Rajasthan, you just have to tip your hats off to them. There are number of leaders in the group. It's important we stay tight. And for us it about building as a side and make adjustments. Rather than over-search for the win, we just have to be clear about how we need to operate. Warner is a world class table, the cards are on the table and I am sure there are a number of conversations to be had,” he further added. Rajasthan Royals captain Sanju Samson lavished praise on Buttler and said that it’s always fun to bat with the England cricketer. “Absolutely, it's always a pleasure to bat with Jos. When Jos goes on, it's always a good sight for us. I think it was a very clinical performance. We started well in the powerplay and just stuck to our plans. It can be a funny game and they have some hitters in their line-up. I think we haven't won as many matches as we would have liked, but it can be funny in the IPL. One ball can change the result. It doesn't matter if I am in form, I want to contribute in a better and dominant way and help my team win,” he said. Experts’ opinion Journalist Boria Majumdar hailed Jos Buttler for his knock. Journalist Ayaz Memon heaped praise on Buttler for his scintillating ton and said it was a marvellous century. Former cricketer S. Badrinath pointed out that the change in captaincy might not bring the change in fortunes all of a sudden for SRH and they need to be patient. SRH will now play MI on Tuesday while RR will take on CSK on Wednesday in Delhi.

IPL 2021 Preview | RCB vs KKR: Different sides, similar paths, as prodigy faces maestro

The 2008 U19 World Cup triumph under the leadership of Virat Kohli certainly marked the beginning of a new era. The success in this edition of the World Cup broke the shackles for Kohli and he never looked back. 13 years later, the right-hander is one of the most successful batsmen, is leading India across formats and is the captain of probably the most flamboyant team in the IPL, Royal Challengers Bangalore. Some 10 years later, after Kohli had won the U19 World Cup, there was another right-handed batsman Shubman Gill who was making a different identity for himself. He had already played some swashbuckling knocks in the 2018 edition of the junior World Cup that India won eventually under Prithvi Shaw’s captaincy. He started to get recognised, made his India debut and was bought by Kolkata Knight Riders soon after. But to be the best, you have to play against the best and perform against the best. It felt as if Gill was waiting for such a chance to prove what is he capable of and he did it in Australia. There is something about this Tour Down Under which certainly offers the Indian batsmen to show their mettle. Current captain Virat Kohli did it in his early days while KL Rahul on his debut tour for India and the latest addition to the tally was Shubman Gill. Unlike Kohli and Rahul, Gill might not have notched up some very big scores during his tour to Australia earlier this year but his valuable contributions didn’t get unnoticed. India won the four-Test series 2-1 and Gill was handed his maiden annual contract by the BCCI. When you look at Gill, there is something about his batting which reflects his abilities and the talent that he possesses. The right-hander has been travelling on a certain path once Kohli had followed. Cut to IPL 2021. Gill had looked off-colour since the beginning of this season. He wasn’t really scoring runs until the last clash against Delhi Capitals. Opening the innings for KKR with Nitish Rana, Gill scored 43 off 38 but the Kolkata side lost the match after they only managed to put 154/6 in 20 overs that DC easily chased down by 7 wickets and spared more than three overs. This probably is the major reason for KKR's disappointing show in this tournament so far. The batsmen have failed to complement each other. If the top order fires all the cylinders, the middle-order messes up and if the middle-order goes all guns blazing, the top order chokes. The KKR batting unit has failed to contribute consistently and that’s why they are on the backfoot. Talking about the Royal Challengers Bangalore, they have been looking good in this edition of the IPL barring the couple of matches that they lost. But the margins of these defeats are really high. While CSK thumped them by 69 runs, Punjab Kings defeated Bangalore by 34 runs. Evidently, the RCB are on the same path that they have been in the past years and that is banking upon few players. Though, the skipper Virat Kohli has talked about ‘balance’ in the team after they opted for Glenn Maxwell during the auctions, it is precisely missing. But if Devdutt Padikkal, Kohli, Maxwell and AB de Villiers don’t chip in, the batting order literally stumbles. RCB really need a proper batsman in the lower middle-order to take up the onus if the top and middle order fumbles. Coming to the last encounter when the two sides faced each other, RCB defeated KKR by 38 runs in Chennai. Maxwell and ABD starred with the bat while Kyle Jamieson picked up three wickets during the course. Inconsistent KKR Kolkata Knight Riders have been struggling to find perfect balance in their line up which can produce results for them consistently. Nitish Rana began the proceedings well in the early stages of the competition but has failed to deliver. Captain Morgan too played a crucial knock against Punjab but wasn’t able to carry his form in the next encounter against Delhi Capitals. Apart from him, hard hitting all-rounder Andre Russell has scored few runs in this competition but again he belongs to the list of the batsmen with inconsistent performances. The Knight Riders bowlers are equally responsible for their team’s struggle in the IPL 2021. There have been instances where the bowlers have leaked runs at high pace, not really giving any chance to the batting unit to make a return back. A balanced line up is what is the basic requirement for KKR. Morgan can still carry on with the same batting line up as all of them showed some character at some stage in the tournament but the bowling attack really needs some change. Bringing in Kuldeep Yadav might prove fruitful for KKR. A left-arm chinaman is always an asset for any team if the captain uses him well and this is the time when England's ‘World Cup-winning skipper’ can show that he is gutsy enough to take tough calls. Adding on, the clash will take place in Ahmedabad which can prove to be a paradise for a left-arm spinner. New faces, old traditions- RCB ‘back’ on track As mentioned above, Royal Challengers Bangalore are genuinely lagging behind one thing and that is the balance in the middle order. The captain might boast about having a perfect one but this is not the case. RCB really need a batsman in the middle order who can hold the two ends tight if they are in a spot of bother. Someone like Washington Sundar or Sachin baby or even the new recruit Mohammed Azharuddeen can fill in that void and if it takes to bench an overseas player, the management shouldn’t hesitate in doing so. They have done it in the past. Another flaw that RCB side has in their ranks is the dismaying performance from the overseas fast bowlers. None of them have really unfolded any spell that could make headlines. With Harshal Patel and Mohammed Siraj doing most of the work, it is difficult to put a halt on the run flow of the opponents if the other bowlers continue to leak runs. The spin department though for now is sorted. Playing in Ahmedabad, RCB should have Shahbaz in the side while Chahl hasn’t been in form for now but is a valuable player for the kind of capability and experience he has. Match Details Match: KKR vs RCB, 30th Match, Indian Premier League 2021 Date: Monday, May 03, 2021 Time: 7:30 PM Venue: Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad Pitch and Toss As the match takes place in Ahmedabad and in the evening, the left-arm spinners will play a crucial role for both the sides while the dew can still be a major factor. We have witnessed this in the past that how Axar patel just rattled the England team in Ahmedabad during the Test series. So, looking at the track which can have something on offer to the spinners, if you win the toss, elect to field or if you are put into bat, the side should try to put something around 170-180. Team News KKR Kolkata Knight Riders players have shown glimpse of their talent but they need to come together and perform to give their team some positive and fruitful result. While the batting line up can be the same, Morgan should experiment with getting Kuldeep in the XI. RCB RCB are still banking on 3-4 players rather than batsmen. They need somebody in the middle order to keep things tight if they are in a spot of bother. Benching an overseas pacer can be on the cards if the management would like to get an Indian batsman in the XI. Probable XI KKR Nitish Rana, Shubman Gill, Rahul Tripathi, Eoin Morgan (C), Andre Russell, DK (WK), Pat Cummins, Sunil Narine, Shivam Mavi, Prasidh Krishna, Kuldeep Yadav RCB Devdutt Padikkal, Virat Kohli (C), Rajat Patidar, Glenn Maxwell, AB de Villiers (WK), Shahbaz Ahmed, Washington Sundar, Daniel Sams, Yuzvendra Chahal, Mohammed Siraj, Harshal Patel Fantasy XI AB de Villiers, Dinesh Karthik, Virat Kohli, Eoin Morgan, Shubman Gill, Andre Russell (VC), Glenn Maxwell (C), Daniel Sams, Yuzvendra Chahal, Harshal Patel, Pat Cummins

SL vs BAN | 2nd Test | Day-4: Sri Lanka inch closer to series victory

Sri Lanka looks set to complete a resounding victory against Bangladesh after ruling the roost for the majority of Day 4. After bowling out Bangladesh for a below-par 251 in their first innings, Sri Lanka needed some quick runs. However, they lost two quick wickets and started the 4th day’s play on 17/2 with a huge lead of 242 runs. They needed to get some quick runs and put Bangladesh on the backfoot and that was exactly what they did. Sri Lanka lost the wicket of Angelo Matthews early on in the day and it was a good delivery from Taijul Islam to bring his downfall. With such a huge lead, Sri Lanka was well in control despite the loss of Matthews. A partnership of 73 runs from Dhananjaya de Silva and skipper Dimuth Karunratne set the tone for the rest of the day. They started scoring quickly without caring about the wickets. Pathum Nissanka and Niroshan Dickwella breezed through in the mini knocks which allowed Sri Lanka to post 194 on the board with the loss of 9 wickets. Karunartne decided to declare the innings on 194, giving a highly impossible target of 437. While the skipper was the top scorer for the Lankans with 66, Taijul Islam bowled brilliantly and finished with a fifer. He returned with figures of 5/72 in 19.2 overs. The visitors got off to a brisk start courtesy some fine strokeplay from opener Tamim Iqbal. He looked in sublime touch but had to depart after making 24 of 26 in a bid to play his strokes. The most disappointing part with Bangladesh’s batting display was everyone got off to start but none could turn it into a big one. All the top five batsmen looked in great touch and played some delightful shots en route to their brief knocks. However, despite their exceptional starts, Bangladesh could only muster 177 on the board with the loss of 5 wickets. Saif Hassan, Najmul Hossain Shanto, Mominul Haque and Mushfiqur Rahim went past 25 but none could convert it into a half-century. Ramesh Mendis and Praveen Jayawickrama bowled brilliantly in the middle overs and bagged three and two wickets respectively. With Bangladesh still needing 260 to win, Sri Lanka can sense victory and they should be hoping to wrap up things early on Day 5. Brief Scores Sri Lanka 1st innings- 493/7 dec (Lahiru Thirimanne 140, Dimuth Karunaratne 118, Taskin Ahmed 4/127) Bangladesh 1st innings- 251 all-out (Tamim Iqbal 92, Praveen Jayawickrama 6/92) Sri Lanka 2nd innings- 194/9 dec (Dimuth Karunaratne 66, Taijul Islam 5/72) Bangladesh 2nd innings- 177/5 (Mushfiqur Rahim 40, Ramesh Mendis 3/86) Bangladesh need 260 more runs to win
