The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is reportedly unhappy with India head coach Gautam Gambhir for his comments about the Kolkata pitch after India suffered a 30-run defeat against South Africa in the first Test at Eden Gardens.
According to reports (by Hindustan Times), the board is not pleased with Gambhir’s remarks but is unlikely to take immediate action. However, sources say that his position could come under review if India fails to perform in the 2026 T20 World Cup, which will be held in India from February 7 to March 8.
“The BCCI is not exactly pleased with India head coach Gautam Gambhir’s forthright comments on the Kolkata pitch following the team’s recent Test defeat to South Africa, even as the board stops short of taking any immediate action. Sources indicate that while Gambhir is likely to remain in charge for now due to a “lack of alternatives", his position could come under scrutiny later this year — particularly if India underperform in the T20 World Cup at home," the report read.
The controversy began after Gautam Gambhir publicly praised the black-soil pitch at Eden Gardens. The surface came under heavy criticism after India collapsed on a turning track that challenged both teams but highlighted technical weaknesses in the Indian batting lineup.
India was bowled out for just 93 in the fourth innings, losing the match by 30 runs. The defeat added to a disappointing streak for India in home Tests, where the team has lost three consecutive series.
“This is exactly the pitch we were looking for. The curator was very, very helpful and supportive. This is exactly what we wanted and this is exactly what we got. When you don't play well, this is what happens,” he said after the Kolkata defeat.
Will BCCI sack Gautam Gambhir as India's head coach?
Sources indicate that Gambhir is likely to remain head coach for now, mainly because there are limited alternatives. The BCCI is expected to conduct a broader review of India’s decline in Test cricket, which will involve both Gambhir and chief selector Ajit Agarkar. However, drastic changes, such as splitting the coaching roles across formats, are considered unlikely at this stage.
