BBL 2021-22: Perth Scorchers continue form after Mitchell Marsh unleashes brilliant all-round show

Perth Scorchers continued their brilliant run in the on-going Big bash League with another win in the tournament on Wednesday in Melbourne. The Scorchers defeated Melbourne Renegades by 21 runs.

Batting first, the Perth Scorchers side rode on an aggressive batting from Mitchell Marsh who struck a 53-ball 86 which included five maximums and as many fours to post 206/5 in 20 overs.

Apart from him, Laurie Evans also chipped in with a brisk and unbeaten 42 off 16.

Kane Richardson was the pick of the bowlers for the Renegades after he returned with figures of 3/33 in 4 overs.

In reply, the Melbourne team lost an early wicket but Aaron Finch and Nic Maddinson stitched a 130-run partnership before Maddinson departed for 67 off 41.

Finch followed him soon after scoring 68 off 43. The Renegades lost the plot after Finch’s departure and failed to get back on track to eventually end the innings at 185/5 in 20 overs.

Mitchell Marsh picked up one wicket for the side for 20 runs in 3 overs.

Marsh who was later adjudged player of the match admitted that the track had much on offer for the batters.

“Great win. Was a good test for us. Great hitting from Finchy and Maddinson. Was a beautiful batting surface. We felt 180 was par, so glad to take 200 because they batted well. I've been just sticking to the process and doing the basics. I'm enjoying myself a lot. It (Maddinson's wicket) was really pleasing, if I didn't then it was probably game over for us,” he said after the game.

Saurashtra and Services rode on all-round to march into the semi-final of the Vijay Hazare Trophy on Wednesday in Jaipur. Himachal Pradesh and Tamil Nadu were the other two teams to have made it to the semis earlier in the competition. Saurashtra vs Vidarbha Saurashtra bowlers thoroughly dominated the Vidarbha batting unit while bowling first and didn’t really let them take the upper-hand during the course. Vidarbha lost early wickets and were soon left tottering at 86/8 before Wankhade took the responsibility on himself and tried to chip in with some runs. He scored a 69-ball 72 to help his side put 150 on the board before getting bundled out in the 41st over. Captain Jaydev Unadkat returned with figures of 2/25 in 9 overs while Chetan Sakariya produced an impressive spell of fast bowling as he gave away 12 runs and picked up one wicket in 8 overs. Sakariya bowled 4 maidens during the course. Saurashtra too suffered some early blows during the chase and were 35/3 in the 10th over before Prerak Mankad and Arpit Vasavada steadied the ship for the side and stitched an unbeaten partnership of 116 runs for the fourth wicket. While Mankad scored 77* off 72 which included a couple of maximums and 10 fours, Vasavada remained not out for 41 off 66 to anchor the side home. Aditya Thakare picked up two wickets for 13 runs in 8 overs for his side. Kerala vs Services Kerala had a disappointing start to the proceedings against Services while batting first after they were reduced to 24/2 in the 7th over. But Kunnummal and Manoharan came in for the side’s rescue and built a stand of 81 runs for the third wicket before Manoharan was sent back in the hut for 41 off 54. The Kerala side then lost the plot as wickets went down at regular intervals to eventually get bowled out for 175 in the 41st over. Kunnummal top-scored with 85 off 106 for Kerala while Dinesh Pathania was the pick of the bowlers for Services as he scalped three wickets for 19 runs in 8 overs. Later, the Services had early hiccups as they were 12/2 in the first two overs but Ravi Chauhan and skipper Rajat Paliwal came in for the rescue and stitched a partnership of 144 runs for the third wicket before Chauhan was sent back for 95 off 90. Paliwal on the other side remained unbeaten at 65 off 86 as Services etched a win by 7 wickets eventually.

Jofra Archer undergoes second elbow surgery, ruled out until next summer

England fast bowler Jofra Archer won’t return to action until next summer, the England and Wales Cricket Board said Tuesday. The right-arm bowler had undergone a second operation on his injured right elbow. “Jofra Archer underwent a second operation on his injured right elbow on Saturday 11 December in London. The procedure addressed the long-standing stress fracture of his right elbow,” the ECB said in a statement. “A return to cricket will be determined in time, but Jofra will will not be available for any of England's remaining Winter series,” the statement added, Archer who hasn’t played cricket at the highest level for nine months has also been ruled out of the Test series against West Indies in March. He had undergone an elbow injury in May as well after he had pulled out of the IPL and then felt pain while bowling for Sussex in an English County Championship match. In 13 matches that Archer has played so far, he has picked up 42 wickets while has 30 and 14 scalps to his name in ODIs and T20Is respectively. The right-hander has been capped 17 times in ODIs while has featured in 12 T20Is so far.

Marnus Labuschagne becomes numero uno batter in ICC Test Rankings

Australia’s Marnus Labuschagne has attained the top spot in the ICC Test Rankings for batters and has 912 rating points to his name. England batsman Joe Root is now slipped to number two while Steve Smith and Kane Williamson occupy the number three and four spots respectively. Labuschagne has been in great touch in the ongoing Ashes 2021-22 against England and has already scored a hundred and a couple of fifties in his four innings so far. In 20 Tests that the batter has played, he has notched up over 2100 runs at an average of 62.14 and has 6 centuries and 12 fifties to his credit. “Ranked fourth before the series, Labuschagne rose two spots to No.2 after scoring 74 in Australia's win in the Brisbane Test,” the ICC said. India Test skipper Virat Kohli is now placed at the seventh position in the rankings. There wasn’t really much of a change in the Test rankings for bowlers as Pat Cummins is still leading the pack followed by India's Ravichandran Ashwin at the second spot. New Zealand’s Tim Southee moved to fourth position while Josh Hazlewood has dropped to fifth after missing the second Ashes Test. Australia’s Mitchell Starc entered the top 10 of the bowlers' list and is now at number nine with 768 points. “Mitchell Starc broke into the top 10 for Test bowlers after returning figures of 6/80 in the second Test, which included a four-for in the first innings that helped reduce England to 236. He moves up to the 9th spot,” the ICC added.
