India is currently on an away assignment and will be battling South Africa in a three-match Test series, which will be followed by three ODIs. Virat Kohli, along with 16 other cricketers will be aiming to create history by winning the first-ever red-ball series in the Rainbow nation.
However, the fever of the series still has not gripped the fans as the captaincy saga involving Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Sourav Ganguly is still a hot topic. For the unversed, Virat denied the claims made by Ganguly that he personally requested the former to not give away his T20I leadership.
Sharing his opinion on the same, former India captain and chief selector Dilip Vengsarkar lambasted BCCI for their handling of the whole situation. Vengsarkar opined that Ganguly should not have been the one making public statements on the episode, rather it was the job of the chairman of the selection committee.
"It’s very unfortunate, the whole thing. I think it should have been handled more professionally by the cricket board. The thing is that Ganguly had no business to speak on behalf of the selection committee. Ganguly is the president of BCCI. Any issue about selection or captaincy, it’s the chairman of the selection committee who should speak," Vengsarkar was quoted as saying to Khaleej Times.
"Ganguly spoke about the whole thing, obviously Virat wanted to make his case clear. I believe it should have been between the chairman of the selection committee and the captain. A captain is selected or removed by the selection committee, that’s not Ganguly’s jurisdiction at all," Vengsarkar added.
The former India cricketer further commented on Kohli's achievements and said that he deserved to be treated better by the BCCI.
"Yes, things should change now. Kohli, you have to respect him, he has done so much for the country, so much for Indian cricket. But how they dealt with him, it must have definitely hurt him," Vengsarkar concluded.
