BBL 10: Ben McDermott's dominance hands Hobart Hurricanes easy win over Sydney Thunder

Hobart Hurricanes thumped Sydney Thunder by 6 wickets after chasing down a target of 178 runs convincingly in 18 overs. Hurricanes had a dismal start to the chase as they lost openers Will Jacks and D Arcy Short on 13.

But wicket-keeper batsman Ben McDermott hard the innings together and played a riveting knock of 56-ball 96 that included 8 boundaries and five maximums. Apart from him Dawid Malan also chipped in with a quick-fire 42 off 28 and captain Peter Handscomb remained unbeaten at 21 off 7.

Nathan McAndrew and Tanveer Sanhga leaked runs at some huge economy rates. McAndrew returned with figures of 1/24 in 2 overs while Sangha was hit for 45 in 4 overs. He did scalp a couple of wickets.

Earlier, Thunder started off well as Unman Khawaja and Alex Hales put 64 for the first wicket but then lost three wickets in quick succession to get reduced to 66/3. Khawaja and Ferguson then stitched a stand of 68 runs for the fourth wicket.

But it was Sam Billings who provided Thunder with some momentum as he notched up a half-century before getting out. Daniel Sams too played a cameo and scored 16* off 6. Scott Boland bagged a four-wicket haul for Hobart.

“We started pretty slow with the ball and with the bat as well. I was a bit shaky to start with, it was nice to catch it up in the end and get the boys home with a nice win. It was bit slower in the day. Sams got a few to grip. It was beautiful under lights. We were sitting last, we have jumped to third now. It's important to get the momentum going forward. Swing hard (key to hit sixes),” McDermott said after the match.

Hobart have now moved to the fourth spot in the points table with 22 points from 11 matches while Thunder are still at two with 23 points from as many games.

Asia Cup 2021: BCCI considers pulling out of tournament citing schedule

The fate of the Asia Cup for this year seems to be in danger as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is considering not sending the Indian team to participate in the multi-national tournament, as per a report in Times of India. The Asia Cup was initially scheduled to take place in last year but the coronavirus pandemic and the subsequent lockdown across the world forced the organisers to postpone it to the current year. However, Indian team is in serious contention to make it to the World Test Championship final to be played in England and the board believes that it can clash with the schedule of the Asia Cup. “Further, the Asia Cup – even if it was scheduled – would’ve probably been played around the same time as the ICC Test Championship final. If India don’t make the final, the industry would’ve preferred the Asia Cup instead. Now, the chance of such a thing happening look bleak so it’s a kind of catch-22 right now,” TOI quoted an official aware of the development as saying. The TOI report cites an unnamed BCCI official to claim that the board is also mulling to organise bilateral series at home against teams such as New Zealand, South Africa and Sri Lanka in order to compensate the broadcaster’s loss of revenue due to the absence of Indian team in the continental tournament. India are the defending champions of the Asia Cup held last time in 2018 in the United Arab Emirates. They had defeated Bangladesh in the finals by seven wickets to lift the cup.

Setback for Australia? Mitchell Starc walks off the field grabbing right hamstring

Australia’s chances of winning the fourth and final Test against India and regaining the Border Gavaskar Trophy may well be in danger as the left-arm pacer Mitchell Starc complained of discomfort in his hamstring after bowling his only over to start the proceedings for hosts. Australia’s star batsman Steve Smith confirmed that the pacer was grabbing his right hamstring and it does not augur well for the hosts who are desperate to win the game at the ground they last lost in 1988. “I saw the same thing when he was walking back, he was grabbing at his right hamstring,” said Smith after the end of day’s play. However, it could also be due to some issues with his shoes as Will Pucovski was seen running with a pair of shoes for Starc near the boundary line in the second over, but the rain stopped the play even before the completion of that over by Josh Hazlewood. Starc has been off-colour throughout the series as he has struggled to swing the new ball after the second Test at the MCG. He was showing signs of coming back in a good rhythm on the fifth and final day of the Sydney Test that ended in a draw and India’s first innings in the series. India are 4/0 with the openers Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill remaining not out at the end of the fourth day’s play. India need further 324 runs to win the series and retain the Border Gavaskar Trophy on the final day of the series but even a draw could allow them to retain the elusive trophy.
