Difficult to hold Ranji Trophy this season: Reports

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president Sourav Ganguly is pretty determined to have the Ranji trophy this season but time is a huge factor.

"He is serious that the Ranji Trophy should be conducted at any cost," said an important member of the BCCI. "Can we pull it off? We don't know,” as per Cricbuzz.

"It will have to be a mega exercise as bio bubbles will have to be created and recreated," said the BCCI member added. Though the reports suggest that there is a possibility of holding the Vijay Hazare Trophy if Ranji Trophy doesn’t take place.

The source further said that the creating a bio-bubble for so many teams isn’t really possible.

“We’re just being practical. Let’s face it – the pandemic still hasn’t gone anywhere. It’s here and our lives continue to remain dispossessed by it. There are 38 First Class teams and a bio-bubble of that degree is simply not possible.”

The domestic season in India started with the beginning of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy earlier this month. The tournament is scheduled to take place till January 31. Bihar, Haryana, Saurashtra, Baroda, Tamil Nadu and Punjab are sitting at the helm of the points table in their respective groups.

Avi Banot has scored the highest runs so far and has a tally of 258 from 4 matches at an average of 64.50 while in the bowling department , it is Ishan Porel who leads the pack with 13 wickets under his belt.

Asia Cup 2021: BCCI considers pulling out of tournament citing schedule

The fate of the Asia Cup for this year seems to be in danger as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is considering not sending the Indian team to participate in the multi-national tournament, as per a report in Times of India. The Asia Cup was initially scheduled to take place in last year but the coronavirus pandemic and the subsequent lockdown across the world forced the organisers to postpone it to the current year. However, Indian team is in serious contention to make it to the World Test Championship final to be played in England and the board believes that it can clash with the schedule of the Asia Cup. “Further, the Asia Cup – even if it was scheduled – would’ve probably been played around the same time as the ICC Test Championship final. If India don’t make the final, the industry would’ve preferred the Asia Cup instead. Now, the chance of such a thing happening look bleak so it’s a kind of catch-22 right now,” TOI quoted an official aware of the development as saying. The TOI report cites an unnamed BCCI official to claim that the board is also mulling to organise bilateral series at home against teams such as New Zealand, South Africa and Sri Lanka in order to compensate the broadcaster’s loss of revenue due to the absence of Indian team in the continental tournament. India are the defending champions of the Asia Cup held last time in 2018 in the United Arab Emirates. They had defeated Bangladesh in the finals by seven wickets to lift the cup.

Setback for Australia? Mitchell Starc walks off the field grabbing right hamstring

Australia’s chances of winning the fourth and final Test against India and regaining the Border Gavaskar Trophy may well be in danger as the left-arm pacer Mitchell Starc complained of discomfort in his hamstring after bowling his only over to start the proceedings for hosts. Australia’s star batsman Steve Smith confirmed that the pacer was grabbing his right hamstring and it does not augur well for the hosts who are desperate to win the game at the ground they last lost in 1988. “I saw the same thing when he was walking back, he was grabbing at his right hamstring,” said Smith after the end of day’s play. However, it could also be due to some issues with his shoes as Will Pucovski was seen running with a pair of shoes for Starc near the boundary line in the second over, but the rain stopped the play even before the completion of that over by Josh Hazlewood. Starc has been off-colour throughout the series as he has struggled to swing the new ball after the second Test at the MCG. He was showing signs of coming back in a good rhythm on the fifth and final day of the Sydney Test that ended in a draw and India’s first innings in the series. India are 4/0 with the openers Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill remaining not out at the end of the fourth day’s play. India need further 324 runs to win the series and retain the Border Gavaskar Trophy on the final day of the series but even a draw could allow them to retain the elusive trophy.
