It seems like the Babar Azam-less Pakistan experiment didn’t last long, and the former captain could be back in the T20I team for the series against South Africa at home. Pakistan selectors dropped a bombshell as they decided to snub him from the Asia Cup squad, citing poor strike rate, but after back-to-back defeats against India, the selectors are pondering their decision-making.
Reports reveal that there is a strong chance for Babar to make his T20I comeback in the South Africa series, as the management is concerned about the poor form of batters in the ongoing Asia Cup event. The top order batters have failed to deliver the goods and the team is only in contention for a place in the finals due to the heroics of their bowlers and middle order players.
According to reports by Saleem Khaliq, The Express Tribune journalist, it is still unclear whether Babar will resume his role as an opener, but the chance of him getting picked are high, especially after the failures of his replacements in Asia Cup.
Pakistan wanted Babar in Asia Cup squad
In an interesting detail that has been revealed in the same report, Pakistan was planning to send Babar to the UAE for the Asia Cup, but the organizers made it clear that Babar could only be included in the Pakistan team if a player gets injured and he comes in as a replacement.
This showcased that Pakistan indirectly regretted dropping him from the squad as they eventually wanted the batter to be in the main team.
Rizwan likely to be back, Salman Ali Agha's captaincy in danger
The report further mentioned that if Mohammad Haris' performances doesn't improve in the remaining Asia Cup matches, he would be stripped of his keeping duties, and the team could bring in Mohammad Rizwan back, who was also snubbed alongside Babar.
Moreover, Salman Ali Agha’s captaincy is in danger. His role, both as a player and as captain, will depend on his performances in the Asia Cup matches. If he fails, he could be removed from the captaincy position and from the T20I team.
