Australia assistant coach Daniel Vettori happy with team’s preparation ahead of India Tour

The newly appointed assistant coach of the Australian team, Daniel Vettori, has expressed his contentment with the subcontinent tours ahead of the Indian tour.

The Aussie team will tour India for the Border Gavaskar Trophy in February 2023. The series is likely to consist of four red-ball matches.

The Australians have lost their last two home Test series in India and have managed to win only one of their last five Test series against the Indian team in the previous 10-12 years. Hence, this tour will hold particular importance for the Pat Cummins-led side.

Vettori thinks the tours to Pakistan and Sri Lanka will help the Australian team better prepare for the Indian Tour.

"In a lot of ways it's been nice to have a subcontinent tour of Pakistan, then here [in Sri Lanka] and build towards India," assistant coach Daniel Vettori said.

"Conditions will be very different. We will get a lot of variation from venue to venue”.

The 43-year-old thinks the Wankhede pitch might offer a similar purchase to the spinners in Pakistan and Sri Lanka, while it can be relatively flat at Mohali.

"You could get anything in between [the pitches in Pakistan and Sri Lanka]. If you play at Mohali it is going to be flat, if you play at Wankhede [in Mumbai] it could turn square like here. You can't just have one plan."

Earlier this year, Australia secured a 1-0 Test series victory in Pakistan, their first tour to the country after nearly 24 years. In the ongoing red-ball series against Sri Lanka, they have started with a 10-wicket victory in the first fixture.

Vettori claims that sweep shots can be the best possible measure of counter-attack against the spinners in the subcontinent pitches. Meanwhile, the team management has allowed the players to play their natural game.

"In a lot of ways sweeps can be blocks over here," Vettori said. "There have been plans for individuals to use whatever they feel comfortable with, and to be as proactive and brave as they could with it,” Vettori added.

The second and last fixture of the red-ball series between Australia and Sri Lanka will get underway from July 8 at Galle. The Aussies will look to complete a series whitewash.

Currently, Australia are in the pole position in the World Test Championship (WTC) 2021-23 table with 84 points.
