Asia Cup 2022: Mohammed Shami backs Arshdeep Singh amidst online trolling

Arshdeep Singh was subjected to some vicious online abuses and trolling, after his dropped chance against Pakistan ended up in a close defeat for the Indian side.

The ‘Men in Blue’ went up against arch-rivals Pakistan in their opening Super Four game of the ongoing Asia Cup 2022 on September 4. During a tense run-chase, Arshdeep dropped a sitter during the dying stages of the match. Pakistan’s equation became much easier a while later, and they eventually catered themselves past the finishing line with a ball to spare.

Mohammed Shami supports Arshdeep, issues open challenge to “trolls”

Senior Indian speedster Mohammed Shami has extended his support for the youngster. During an interview with Times Now, the cricketer said that trolls on the internet are nowhere to be seen when players are performing well.

He described such trolls as internet users with “fake accounts”, whose only job is to discredit players. Shami said:

“They only live to troll us, have no other job. When we perform well they don’t say you took a good catch but will troll us?”

The veteran paceman also dared the trolls to come out with their “real accounts” on the internet.

“If you have the audacity, then comes from real accounts; anyone can message from fake accounts.”

Shami himself has a history of coping online as well as on-field trolling. Last year after the T20 World Cup defeat to Pakistan, he sustained similar series of abuses from fans across Twitter and Instagram.

Moreover, even after India’s defeat to Pakistan in the final of the 2017 Champions Trophy, the speedster was seen having a verbal go with one of the spectators at The Oval.
