Renowned umpire Anil Chaudhary won’t be part of the officiating team during the imminent 18th season of the Indian Premier League. Been part of the cash-rich league since 2008, this is the first time when Chaudhary won’t be officiating during an IPL season.
Chaudhary, meanwhile, will be seen working with host broadcaster JioStar in the capacity of a Haryanvi commentator. Having already commenced his broadcasting career, Delhi-based Chaudhary will add relevant stardom to Haryanvi commentary – a feed which has gained widespread popularity of late.
Anil Chaudhary Retires As Umpire, Say Reports
Chaudhary, 60, has called time on a decorated umpiring career, as per a report by PTI. Assuming it turns out to be true, Ranji Trophy 2024/25 final between Vidarbha and Kerala in Nagpur last month would be remembered as his last appearance as an umpire.
“As an umpire, I did around 15 games in a season, here I would be doing more than 50 [matches]. On air, former cricketers look at the game in their own way and being an umpire I have a different perspective on the game. It is fun,” Chaudhary told PTI.
Taking into consideration how active he has been on social media platform Instagram and the podcasting space lately, Chaudhary entering into the broadcasting world isn’t surprising by any means.
Anil Chaudhary Umpiring Career
Notably, it was over 11 years ago when Chaudhary made his international debut during a one-off India-Australia T20I in Rajkot. The following month, he stood in his maiden ODI in Kanpur.
It took Chaudhary more than seven years to register a Test debut. With cricket boards required to arrange neutral umpires due to the novel COVID-19 pandemic, Chaudhary’s first Test appearance had come during the first India-England Test in Chennai four years ago.
All in all, he officiated in 12 Tests (four as an on-field umpire and eight as a TV umpire), 49 ODIs (27 as an on-field umpire and 22 as a TV umpire) and 64 T20Is (44 as an on-field umpire and 20 as a TV umpire) to be only the fourth Indian umpire to officiate in 100+ international matches in men’s cricket.
For the unversed, Nitin Menon, India's most successful umpire, had opted out of IPL 2021 due to family reasons.
