WPL 2023: Records Galore As Mumbai Indians Thump Gujarat Giants

On Sunday, the much-awaited Women's Premier League began with a bang, as Mumbai Indians mauled Gujarat Giants by a whopping 143-run margin in the tournament opener in Mumbai. 

Batting first, Mumbai Indians posted a mammoth total of 207 runs, riding on a sensational fifty from Harmanpreet Kaur and scintillating knocks from Hayley Matthews and Amelia Kerr. 

In reply, Gujarat Giants crumbled like a pack of cards, being bundled out for a paltry 64 by Mumbai's rampant bowling lineup. 

This game saw plenty of records being created, courtesy of Mumbai Indians' clinical performance. 

Harmanpreet Kaur slams her fastest T20 fifty

Mumbai Indians' captain Harmanpreet Kaur set the stage on fire through her breathtaking stroke play. Coming at number four, Kaur took all Gujarat bowlers to the cleaners to compile a gorgeous 30-ball 65, powering her side to a massive total.

She completed her fifty in just 22 balls, recording her fastest-ever half-century in the shortest format. Her previous best was a 23-ball fifty for Sydney Thunder against Brisbane Heat in the Women's Big Bash League 2018. 


143: The highest victory margin in major Women's T20 leagues

Mumbai Indians crushed Gujarat Giants by 143 runs, the biggest-ever margin by runs by a team in major Women's T20 leagues- WBBL, WCSL, The Hundred Women, T20 Challenge, WPL and WCPL. 

The previous highest was Perth Scorchers' 104-run win over Melbourne Renegades in the WBBL 2022. 


207: Joint second-highest team total in major Women's T20 leagues

Batting first, Mumbai Indians posted a gigantic total of 207, the joint second-highest team total (alongside Melbourne Renegades' 207 versus Brisbane Heat in WBBL 2021) in major T20 leagues.

Sydney Sixers hold the record for the highest team total of 242, which they scored against Melbourne Stars in the WBBL 2017. 


64: Joint second-lowest team total in major Women's T20 leagues

Chasing 208, Gujarat Giants were bowled out for a meagre 64, setting the record for the joint second-lowest team total in major Women's leagues, alongside Yorkshire Diamonds' 64 all out against Southern Vipers in the WCSL 2016. 

Team Velocity holds the infamous record for the lowest team total of 47, which they scored against Trailblazers in the Women's T20 Challenge 2020.
