Tonight, India Women will cross swords against Sri Lanka Women in their third group-stage match of the ongoing T20 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates. Led by Harmanpreet Kaur, India Women had a disastrous start to the tournament, losing their first match against New Zealand Women. Although they managed to win the subsequent affair against arch-rivals Pakistan, their unconvincing victory left their Net Run Rate (NRR) in tatters.
Considering India Women have two matches left, the Sri Lanka clash is a must-win game for Harmanpreet Kaur and co. However, will they be knocked out if they somehow end up losing this match?
India's Semifinal Qualification Scenario Explained Before Sri Lanka Clash
If India Women turn things around and secure a win over Sri Lanka Women, they will add two more points to their tally and move to second place in the Group A points table. However, despite the win, they will depend on New Zealand to defeat Pakistan, as the latter have a significantly better NRR than them.
Having said that, India must secure a win against the in-form Australia Women against all odds to secure their berth in the semifinal. If they lose against the Aussies, Harmanpreet Kaur and co will rely on the other results to go their way (SL to defeat NZ by a big margin, PAK to lose vs AUS and NZ) so that they finish the group stage with a higher NRR than both New Zealand and Pakistan.
However, if they lose this match, the Women in Blue will find themselves at the bottom of the pile, and their semifinal qualification dream will be almost shattered. Even if they defeat Australia Women, their inferior NRR will adversely affect their campaign, leading to their group-stage exit from the competition.
