India remains a special place for England batting great Joe Root. The elegant right-hander made his Test debut here during the successful 2012 trip and will grace the subcontinent turf for the fourth time in his gloried career for England during the upcoming five-match Test series, starting Thursday (January 25).

Of all English batters, Root is one of the rare entities to have enjoyed his time playing in challenging Indian conditions. Using his great ability to counter spin with precise footwork and clear decision-making, the 33-year-old is perhaps the only visiting batter to have dominated the famed spin pairing of Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja in their den.

Root also has a strong technique to handle fast-bowling, which has helped him withstand Indian pacers and their nous to generate reverse-swing with the old ball as well as uneven bounce off the tracks. He has a fantastic overall tally of 952 runs in his 10 Tests and 20 innings in India.

Joe Root Test Record In India

Since the start of Root's career in late 2012 in Nagpur, no English batter has averaged as high as his remarkable 50.10 and or made more hundreds than his two centuries in Tests involving the great batter in India. Ever since he made a skillful 73 in his first innings on these shores, the veteran cricketer has only grown from strength to strength with each trip.

When Root returned to India during the 2016-17 winters, he emerged as the stand-out player amidst the doom and gloom endured by the rest of the pack. Even as the visitors were outclassed 4-0 in a five-match Test series, Root smashed a whopping 591 runs with a century and four fifties.

Only a handful of batters in Test match history can proudly boast of one prolific series in India. Root has two in his esteemed CV as he rose up as England's lone warrior even during the 2021 tour to the country.

The great batter struck a memorable double hundred as captain to guide his team to an epic win in Chennai in the first Test and finished the series with 368 runs from his eight innings in England's 1-3 series drubbing.

Root's forms a love-affair with Indian conditions so deep that his only fifer in Test cricket as an effective part-time off-spinner also came here during the 2021 trip in Ahmedabad.
