Rohit Sharma has been an exemplary leader for India, especially in ODIs. In the 51 matches, that he has captained, Sharma has maintained a win percentage of over 70%. Besides, he has also led the team to the ODI World Cup final. So, Sharma has a great experience about his team and knows how to handle the unit under different conditions.

Strategic Acumen - 6/10

Critics have often said that Rohit Sharma's captaincy is restricted by pre-formed strategies. It has been often been found that the Indian skipper fails to adapt his plans as per the game situation. As long as the match goes in his favour, he is a great captain, but when it starts getting out of hand, Sharma is often found lacking a plan B.

Overall Evaluation: 7/10

The Champions Trophy 2025 will see a return of Steve Smith as the captain of the Australian team. The Aussie star has previously led the side and has done a decent job in the role.

Strategic Acumen: 7.5/10

Steve Smith has been often been identified as one of the best readers of the game. He has a great ability to adapt his strategies and come up with spontaneous plans. However, he has proven himself more as a captain in the Tests. CT 2025 will be an opportunity for Smith to leave an impact as a captain in the ODI format.

Temba Bavuma has captained the South African team in 39 matches and has an average record in the role. His leadership has not left a great impact yet for the team. However, he has been there at the role for a few seasons and knows his players and resources quite well.

Strategic Acumen: 6/10

Temba Bavuma has also been criticised often for his limitations in imagination as a leader. Sometimes, he could be a unidimensional captain who can be reactive instead of taking charge and being pro-active.

Overall Evaluation: 6/10

Jos Buttler has captained England in the ODI format for the past three seasons. However, he has lost more games as an ODI skipper than he has won and that seems to be a concerning thing.

Strategic Acumen: 5/10

England follow a particular strategy in most of the games. They looks to play decisive cricket branded by an ultra aggressive style of play. However, often when things have gone southward for them with that approach, Buttler has looked a bit clueless as a leader.

Overall Evaluation: 5/10

Although the number of matches as a captain is not with him, the fact that he has won a tri-series against South Africa and Pakistan in Asian conditions. So. he has the experience of handling the team under pressure and in big matches.

Strategic Acumen: 7/10

Mitchell Santer has looked like an able leader in the ODIs that he has captained. He has tried to adapt and change his strategies in the games as per the demand of the situation. So far, as a strategist and a proactive leader, Santner has done a good job.

Overall Evaluation: 6/10

Hashmatullah Shahidi has proven himself as an able leader of the Afghanistan team. Despite having limited resources Shahidi has worked well with the unit and has brought out the best in the players of the team.

Strategic Acumen: 5/10

While Shahidi has the experience of leading the side on the big stage, strategising and planning could be a weak part for the southpaw. Shahidi has often been a reactive skipper, one of the example being the Australia match in ODI World Cup 2023.

Overall Evaluation: 6/10

8. Bangladesh - Najmul Hossain Shanto

Experience: 2/10

Najmul Hossain Shanto has led the Bangladesh team in 11 ODI matches so far. He has the least win percentage among the captains in the Champions Trophy 2025. It gives the indication that he has not been able to use his resources well or get the best out of his players.

Strategic Acumen: 3/10

What we have seen of Najmul Hossain Shanto's captaincy, we can say that he is one of the most uni-dimensional captains in the tournament. Shanto has often lacked the inspiration to lead the team from the front and has often lacked a fall back plan in crucial stages.

Overall Evaluation: 2.5/10
