The Indian team will be looking to revive themselves after the humiliation in Australia during the Border Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. The biggest chance that the team will get to reinstate their pride will be the Champions Trophy 2025.
As per the latest reports, ICC has given the teams till January 12, 2025, to announce their squads for the tournament. However, the reports suggest India might announce its team for the tournament a day before the deadline on January 11. Before BCCI reveals India's squad for the marquee event, here is a look at the probable set of 15 players and the reserves who could board the flight to Abu Dhabi.
Rohit Sharma To Lead And Virat Kohli At 3
Well, we all know that Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are not exactly going through a purple patch as far as batting is concerned. However, when it comes to ODIs, Rohit and Virat are two of the best in the business. Sharma has a brilliant record as a captain in the limited overs, and Kohli enjoys ODIs the most. So, there is no way India will be going for the Champions Trophy 2025 by dropping these two stalwarts.
Why KL Over Pant?
Nitish Reddy has done brilliantly and has given even testament about his temperament during the recently concluded Border Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. So, it will not be surprising to see India giving him an ODI debut during the England series and then drafting him into the squad for CT 2025.
If Reddy comes into the team, he will definitely be a part of the team playing XI, which will give more balance to the team composition. If Reddy comes into the playing composition, Pant will have to sit it out, as KL Rahul has proven his versatility as a batter in the ODIs. The fact that he can bat at any number and have equal effectivity makes him the first-choice keeper for playing XI. However, Rishabh Pant will be a part of the squad and the team's reserve keeper.
Will Jasprit Bumrah Play Champions Trophy 2025?
One major scare for India was Jasprit Bumrah, who suffered a back spasm during the fifth and final BGT Test at SCG and could not bowl. He went for the scans, and it seemed serious enough to keep him out of action during the day of the match when it mattered the most. Latest reports suggest that he will miss the majority of home series against England, however, there is no such news for CT 2025 . So, we expect that Bumrah will be fit to go for the marquee event and will be a major part of the Indian plans during the tournament.
On the other hand, India's ODI World Cup 2023 hero, Mohammed Shami, seems to be in action and fit from the injury that has kept him out of action for so long. Given the effectivity of the pacer and the impact that the Shami-Bumrah pair can leave in important matches, we expect the duo to be up and charging for the major event.
