Massive news came on Tuesday from the ECB when Ben Stokes, easily England’s greatest clutch player, opted himself out of the upcoming T20 World Cup, to be played in the West Indies and the USA just after the IPL 2024.

England’s Test captain, who hit the winning runs in the 2022 T20 World Cup final against Pakistan, ruled himself out of the upcoming showpiece event, saying that would be ‘a sacrifice that allows me to be the allrounder I want to be for the foreseeable future.’

So how will England, under the leadership of Jos Buttler, team up while taking on the field to defend the title? Let's put it this way: they have a pretty much-settled core filled with multi-dimensional all-rounders. And Stokes’ T20I numbers are not stupendous either, turning his decision into a blessing in disguise for the English team.

As usual, Buttler will be the leader of the pack, with Sam Curran, last edition’s Man of the Series, and also the Man of the Match final, being the commander of his unit. Then there are Liam Livingstone, Will Jacks, Moeen Ali, and Chris Woakes, who will be there to support them.

Dawid Malan, Harry Brook, Adil Rashid, and Jason Roy will surely be there, along with Mark Wood and Gus Atkinson, who decided to skip IPL 2024 to manage their workloads for the World Cup.

Rehan Ahmed, who was picked when England toured the West Indies in December 2023, is expected to be with Rashid as two designated spinners. On the other hand, Ben Duckett and Tymal Mills, who were there in the West Indies for a five-match T20I series, are expected to be there as reserves, potentially with the returning Jofra Archer.
