3 Reasons Why Kohli's RCB Made A Blunder By Releasing Glenn Maxwell Before IPL 2025

Glenn Maxwell, fondly known as the 'Big Show' has the ability to turn the game on his head whenever he gets going and has won numerous games for the teams he has played over the years. He has been a star both at the international and at the league level and has an aura that very few people can even dream of.

The Aussie is now 36-year-old but is far from finished and keeps dishing out match-winning performances one after another. He is currently playing for Melbourne Stars in BBL and is doing quite well, but RCB decided to release him after four years of association and it could prove to be a big blunder from the franchise.

Here are the three reasons why RCB will miss Glenn Maxwell in IPL 2025 and why it is a big mistake from the franchise.

A Genuine Match-Winner - Complete T20 Package

Glenn Maxwell is a genuine match-winner and has won numerous games single-handedly over the years. He has the ability to strike from the ball one and can take the pitch out of the equation with his strokeplay. Consistency may not be his forte, but if he bats for a decent amount of time, his team is bound to win games.

In the ongoing BBL, his return to form has changed fortunes of his team Melbourne Stars as well and has now smashed consecutive fifties at a strike-rate of close to 200. He is big-match player too who knows how to step up in tough situations something which he displayed in the 2023 World Cup with a double hundred against all odds. 

Maxwell can bat anywhere in the batting line-up and can bowl handy off-breaks too, making him a complete package and a perfect T20 cricketer. Overall, he has over 10000 runs in T20s at a strike-rate of over 150 and has close to 200 wickets too, so RCB by releasing him has left out a legend of T20 cricket which can prove to a very big void to fill.

Performances For RCB

Maxwell played for RCB from 2021 to 2024 and though he has a bad last season, the Aussie was brilliant in the initial three years. In the 2021 season, Maxwell scored  scored 513 runs at an average of 42.75 and a strike-rate of 144.10 while he scored 301 runs and 400 runs in the next two seasons. His strike-rate was brilliant was 169.10 in the 2022 season while in the 2023 season, it was even better at 183.48.

So, Maxwell delivered with consistency and impactful performances in three seasons and quite often changed the momentum for his side with big shots early on in his innings. In all these seasons, he bowled some crucial overs in Powerplay and middle phase and overall was one of the main reasons of RCB's success from 2021 to 2023.

RCB have a tagline of 'Play Bold' and there are very few people in world cricket who are as bold as Glenn Maxwell. The Australian gave his all while playing for RCB and enjoys a great fan following in Bengaluru. He is a big brand in cricket and his presence could have helped the franchise even grow further commercially. Also, by retaining him, RCB could have tapped into the 'loyalty factor' and gained more support.

Also, his style of play is perfect for a good batting deck at the Chinnaswamy. RCB have brought in players like Tim David, Jacob Bethell as his replacement, but none of them is as proven a performer as Glenn Maxwell.
