The IPL 2024 season has just kicked off, and Virat Kohli is already making headlines by breaking records. In the ongoing match between the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and the Punjab Kings (PBKS), Kohli, one of India’s finest athletes, made history by taking the catch of Punjab opener Jonny Bairstow, thus becoming the most successful Indian fielder in T20 cricket with 173 catches.

The breakthrough moment came on the third delivery of the third over when Mohammed Siraj, after being hit for two consecutive fours, dismissed the dangerous Jonny Bairstow for 8(6). Siraj delivered a back of a length delivery on the off-stump, tempting Bairstow to go for the pull shot. However, the extra bounce surprised Bairstow, resulting in a top-edge.

Despite a slight mix-up between Kohli and Glenn Maxwell at mid-off, Kohli moved forward and secured the catch safely.

With this catch, Kohli surpassed Suresh Raina's record of 172 catches to become the most successful Indian fielder in T20 cricket. Following Kohli on the list are Indian skipper Rohit Sharma with 167 catches, Manish Pandey with 146, and Suryakumar Yadav with 136.

In terms of the match, RCB captain Faf du Plessis won the toss and chose to bowl first in their first home match of the IPL 2024 campaign at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium. This decision came after RCB's loss to the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in their tournament opener on Friday night.

In addition to his fielding prowess, Kohli also made history during the opening match of the season against CSK by becoming the first Indian batter to surpass 12,000 runs in T20 cricket. Achieving this milestone in his 377th T20 match and 360th innings, Kohli has scored 8 centuries and 91 fifties in T20 cricket.

Kohli's excellence in the field was also evident last year when he became India’s leading fielder in the ODI World Cup, securing 15 catches to claim the top spot.
