Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) clinched a seven-wicket victory over Delhi Capitals (DC) in IPL 2024's Match 47 at Eden Gardens, solidifying their second position on the points table.

Delhi Capitals, choosing to bat first, stumbled out of the gate and never recovered. Their top and middle order departed cheaply.

Towards the end, Kuldeep Yadav’s unbeaten 35 off 26 balls helped DC scrape past 150, closing at 153/9. KKR’s bowlers were on the money, led by Varun Chakaravarthy with standout figures of 3/16.

In the chase, Phil Salt’s blistering 68 off 33 balls set the stage, firing KKR to 79 for the first wicket in just six overs. After a brief wobble, Shreyas Iyer (33* off 23) and Venkatesh Iyer (26* off 23) steered the ship home, reaching 154/3 in 16.3 overs with minimal fuss.

Here's the timeline of how KKR vs DC panned out in Kolkata-

Top Order Trouble for Delhi Capitals

Delhi Capitals, after opting to bat first, faced immediate hurdles as they lost their top order quickly. Prithvi Shaw was dismissed for 13, followed by an in-form Jake Fraser-McGurk, who could only add 12 runs to the scoreboard before falling prey to Mitchell Starc's bowling.

The early dismissals continued with Shai Hope returning to the pavillion for just 6 runs off Vaibhav Arora's bowling, leaving Delhi in an abysmal situation at 37/3 after just 3.3 overs.

Middle-Order Resistance and Kuldeep Yadav's Vital Knock

Despite the early setbacks, Delhi's middle order tried to stabilize the innings. Abishek Porel contributed a handy 18 runs, but it was Rishabh Pant who added some urgency with a quick 27 off 20 ball before being dismissed by Varun Chakravarthy.

Axar Patel struggled to accelerate, scoring 15 from 21 deliveries as he was cleaned up by Sunil Narine. The real momentum shift came from Kuldeep Yadav, who played a crucial unbeaten inning of 35 runs from 26 balls, guiding Delhi Capitals past the 150-run mark to finish at 153/9 in allotted 20 overs. This late surge provided a semblance of respectability to their total.

Salt’s Assault Shakes Up the Powerplay

Kolkata Knight Riders' chase began with an explosive performance by Phil Salt, who dominated the Delhi Capitals' bowlers with a blistering 68 off just 33 balls. His aggressive batting in the powerplay was instrumental in setting a strong foundation for KKR.

Alongside him, Sunil Narine played a supportive role, contributing 15 runs from 10 balls. Together, they amassed a robust 79-run partnership for the first wicket within the first six overs, setting a high pace for the innings.

Brief Stumble in the Middle

After the fall of Sunil Narine, Rinku Singh was promoted to number three in an attempt to maintain the momentum.

However, he couldn't capitalize on the opportunity, adding only 11 runs before being dismissed. This brief period saw KKR losing a bit of the rhythm established earlier but kept the run chase within reach.

Steady Finish by the Iyers

As the innings progressed towards the target, skipper Shreyas Iyer took control, anchoring the innings with a composed 33* off 23 balls.

His calm presence at the crease ensured that KKR stayed on course. Venkatesh Iyer complemented the skipper by scoring a crucial 26* off 23 balls, including hitting the winning runs.

This partnership not only steadied KKR after a minor middle-order wobble but also guided them to a comfortable win with 3.3 overs to spare, reaching the target at 154 for the loss of three wickets.
