Rajasthan Royals opener Yashasvi Jaiswal slumped to yet another low score, this time falling in the first over of the match against Punjab Kings in the IPL 2024 season. The 22-year-old, who is also expected to open the innings for Team India at next month’s T20 World Cup 2024, has tallied 348 runs from 13 innings in IPL 2024 at a subpar average of 29.

Following Jaiswal’s latest batting debacle against Punjab Kings, a legion of Indian cricket supporters took to social media and questioned his place in the T20 World Cup-bound team. Some of the fans even urged the Indian team management to consider IPL 2024 ‘Orange Cap’ holder and all-time T20I great Virat Kohli to open the innings instead.

Netizens want Virat Kohli to open for India

Rajasthan Royals opener Yashasvi Jaiswal was cleaned up for a duck by Punjab Kings captain Sam Curran in the first over of the match at Guwahati on May 15. Owing to his latest batting debacle, Jaiswal’s IPL 2024 numbers stand at 348 runs at a subpar average of 29. Moreover, the youngster has managed to list just two scores of fifty or more out of 13 IPL 2024 innings.

Following his dismissal to Sam Curran, a number of Indian cricket fans and IPL followers took to X (formerly Twitter) and questioned his place in India’s T20 World Cup 2024 side. Some of the fans even claimed that RCB’s top-order batter Virat Kohli should be opening the innings for Team India at next month’s tournament.

Here is a look at some of the fans reacting to Yashasvi Jaiswal’s lackluster batting numbers in an otherwise high-scoring IPL 2024 season:

Virat Kohli, on the other hand, is the current recipient of the ‘Orange Cap’ of IPL 2024, with more than 650 runs to his name from just 13 innings. The legendary Indian batter is also the highest run-maker in T20 World Cup matches and T20 internationals overall.

Team India is slated to commence their T20 World Cup 2024 campaign with a match against Ireland on June 5, i.e., shortly after the conclusion of IPL 2024.
