With the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 taking place in India, expectations from fans, and former players on Team India are higher than ever. A lot will depend on India's batting stalwarts Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, who might be playing their final WC, given their age.

While Rohit has struggled lately with the bat, Kohli in limited-overs cricket has regained his touch and has been amongst the runs for India since the Bangladesh tour last 2022. In 9 ODIs since, the former India captain has scored 472 runs with two centuries, including his 46th 50-over hundred.

Former West Indies opener and Kohli's close friend, Chris Gayle has backed his Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) teammate to dominate in the upcoming CWC 2023, topping all batting charts.

Speaking to PTI, Gayle stated that the pressure will be on Team India as they start favourite at home.

Here's what Gayle said

"Tough times don't last long tough players last longer. Virat is tough mentally as well physically. I don't see any reason why he shouldn't go to this World Cup and dominate. As players, we always go through phases where things seem a bit dull and you need positive energy around to uplift yourself. Once we get back in the groove, we know how dangerous we can be.

I know India have not won an ICC trophy in a long time and same is the case with us (West Indies). We last won in 2016. Pressure will be on India as they play at home as favourites,"

Kohli's immediate international assignment will be against West Indies in the Caribbean, as India tours the island nation for 2 Tests, 3 ODI, and 5 T20I series starting next month.

India also plays the Asia Cup 2023, which will be their last outing before the CWC 2023. Team India open the WC campaign against Australia on October 8 in Chennai.
