After the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) announced the squad for the second Test against England, the decision to exclude Babar Azam has sparked widespread debate. Many cricket experts and former players have expressed both support and criticism for this decision. One notable addition to the discussion is Aakash Chopra, who has shared his opinion on the matter.
Aakash Chopra Criticises PCB After Babar Azam's Exclusion
Former Indian cricketer has expressed his surprise at Pakistan’s decision to drop Babar Azam following their innings defeat to England in the first Test in Multan. In a video on his YouTube channel, he questioned the logical reason behind dropping Babar Azam, considered one of Pakistan's most celebrated players.
He also argued that the decision to exclude the former captain reflects Pakistan’s attempt to find a scapegoat after the loss and observed that Babar’s reputation as Pakistan’s 'GOAT' has suffered a significant blow.
"It was a hugely publicized loss, a loss which became historic, and there was an interesting stat that whichever team got all out for 556 runs in this century lost. So when you lose after scoring 556, there is a lot of backlash, and then scapegoats are found. It's not a scapegoat this time, they said they will cut the GOAT itself because if we talk about Pakistan, Babar Azam's reputation was made and enhanced like a GOAT player. It used to be said that the king would do it but the runs weren't getting scored, there is no doubt about that," Chopra added.
Babar Azam's Recent Poor Form
Babar Azam is going through a very difficult time, and his recent struggle for form has been one of the main reasons Pakistan cricket is suffering.
The stylish batter hasn’t scored a half-century in his last 18 Test innings. His most recent significant contribution came in December 2022, with a 161-run knock against New Zealand in Karachi. Since then, Babar has faced mounting pressure due to inconsistent performances, which likely contributed to the decision to sideline him for the remainder of the series against England.
As Pakistan heads into the remaining Tests without Babar Azam, the decision to drop one of their most prominent players raises questions about the team’s strategy and the management’s response to criticism. With the series at stake, Pakistan’s squad will need to regroup and address their shortcomings in the wake of this controversial move.
