Shubman Gill takes pride in leading India in ODI cricket
After leading India brilliantly in the previous five-match Test series against England, young Shubman Gill has now been appointed as the skipper of the ODI side, replacing stalwart Rohit Sharma for the upcoming tour of Australia.
In a video released by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on their website, Gill has expressed his feelings about being given the chance to lead India in ODI cricket.
"Difficult to put it in words, this state is very special for me, from captaining my IPL team, then getting to know that I'll be the Test captain, I was here and then my first Test match at home, leading it in Ahmedabad, this venue has always been very special for me," Gill said on BCCI.tv.
Gill mentioned the word 'pride' when he explained that it is an honour for him to lead India in one-day cricket, where they lifted the ICC Champions Trophy this year in February.
"It's the biggest honour to be able to lead your country in one-day and to be able to lead the side, you know that, has done so well; it's immense pride for me, and I hope I'll be able to do great," he further added.
Gill lays India's roadmap ahead of the 2027 World Cup in South Africa
Looking ahead, Shubman Gill will be leading India in the ICC Men's World Cup 2027, to be played in South Africa, Namibia, and Zimbabwe. Revealing the roadmap, the right-hander disclosed that India have around 20 one-day internationals to be played before the marquee event in the African region, where they will be hoping to lift the silverware.
"I think we have about 20 ODIs before the World Cup, and obviously, the ultimate goal is the World Cup in South Africa, so everything that you play and all the players that we play, they're gonna try their best and we're going to try our best to be able to have a great season before we get to the World Cup, and hopefully, we will be fully ready, when we go to South Africa, and win that World Cup," he concluded.
This video was released after India dominated over the Caribbean side in the first Test played in Ahmedabad, as they won comfortably by an innings and 140 runs, thanks to Ravindra Jadeja's magnificent show, where he scored a brilliant 104 not out with the bat, while picking up four wickets with the ball in the second innings, wrapping West Indies out for just 146 under three days.
