Team India attained complete control over England by the time of stumps on Day 2 of the second Test at Edgbaston in Birmingham. After mounting 587 runs in the first innings, Indian fielders Karun Nair and KL Rahul held on to their catches late in the day as England lost three top-order wickets in the final 20 overs.
Captain Shubman Gill himself snared a blinder at third slip after occupying the crease for more than eight hours with the bat. After enjoying a comprehensive day in Birmingham, the Indian skipper addressed his team’s fielding turnaround, especially after undergoing a series of catching blunders in the first Test at Headingley last week.
Shubman Gill Credits Fielding Fix For Day 2 Fightback
Indian skipper Shubman Gill praised his team’s fielding turnaround after he, along with teammates Karun Nair and KL Rahul held on to some sharp catches in the slips late on Day 2 of the second Test against England. While speaking with the Sky Sports after stumps, the cricketer was asked to specify which aspects did Team India worked on after losing the series opener by five wickets in a record-chase.
Shubman Gill said:
“Getting the catches was really good confidence for us. Fielding is something we spoke about going into this match.”
It is worth noting that Team India dropped several catches in the first Test at Headingley, with young opening batter Yashasvi Jaiswal himself spilling some crucial chances. India’s repeated fielding blunders ended up costing them the match, as the Englishmen pulled off a record 371-run chase on a thrilling Day 5 to take a 1-0 lead in the five-match series.

Akash Deep picked up the wickets of Ben Duckett and Ollie Pope, while Mohammed Siraj removed Zak Crawley, all within the first eight overs of the innings. England eventually reached 77-3 from 20 overs by stumps, with Harry Brook and senior man Joe Root both occupying the crease at 30* and 18* respectively. The two cricketers will resume the English innings on Day 3 while trailing India by another 520 runs.
