In an age where stability is extremely crucial, Mutyala Reddy chose the uncertain path, betting all he had on a dream. The father of India’s emerging all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy, Mutyala’s story is as much about courage and sacrifice as it is about a father’s unbreakable faith in his son.
Nitish Reddy’s Father Reveals the Sacrifice Behind His Son’s Success
While Nitish Reddy shines on the international stage, it is the story behind his rise that shows a father’s love can indeed move mountains. In an interview with Cricbuzz, Mutyala revealed that he was a man with a well-settled government job at Hindustan Zinc, providing the family with a steady income and comfortable lifestyle in Visakhapatnam.
But in 2012, a fork in the road appeared when Hindustan Zinc decided to suspend operations in Visakhapatnam. The move offered Mutyala the option to relocate to Udaipur, Rajasthan, to keep his job.
Instead, he took the road less travelled, trading in a stable income and benefits for a dream as fragile as a soap bubble. With 25 years left to serve, Mutyala opted for early retirement to stay back in Visakhapatnam and nurture Nitish’s budding cricketing talent.
“At that time, Nitish was just learning the basics of cricket and I thought if I go to Udaipur, it would be difficult for him to manage with language,” he explained. “We also weren't sure about the facilities with regards to cricket, so I thought it would be better if I stay back at my native place and help Nitish pursue his passion.”
This was no moment of impulsiveness but a carefully thought-out gamble. Mutyala, who had no financial cushion from his father, a farmer, relied on his retirement fund’s interest to sustain the family. As the world around him questioned his sanity, Mutyala stood his ground, fuelled by sheer willpower and the quiet resolve to see his son rise.
"My only duty was to accompany him all day - to the grounds, to the gym, making sure his travel was taken care of,” he recalled.
The weight of family expectations, financial strain, and societal judgment could have deterred him, but Mutyala held his head high, withstanding the whispers of skepticism from relatives and friends alike.
Mutyala Highlights The Role Of His Wife In Their Journey
If Mutyala was the bedrock, his wife Manasa was the glue that held the family together.
“The only person I was concerned about and felt answerable to was my wife. I spoke to her, told her that we need to cut down on all unnecessary expenses and convinced her to lead a low-key life. She didn't say a word, just nodded in acknowledgement. She has been my biggest source of strength till date," added Mutyala.
Without a word of complaint, she adapted to their altered reality, committing to a life centred around their son’s cricketing dreams. Together, they turned adversity into a labour of love, each sacrifice strengthening their resolve for Nitish’s success.
And now, years later, the Sunrisers Hyderabad all-rounder is repaying that faith with remarkable performances on the field. In only his second T20I match, the young all-rounder scored a thunderous 74 off 34 balls and claimed two vital wickets, steering India to victory against Bangladesh.
As the cricketing world celebrates Nitish’s promising career, it’s clear that his father’s leap of faith laid the foundation for this rise.
