Former South Africa captain AB de Villiers has commended England's smart approach in Test cricket, praising their focus on winning and their willingness to take risks.

De Villiers took to Twitter to express his admiration, stating that England's style, often referred to as "Bazball," is actually a display of smart cricket. He noted that the team's approach makes sense and emphasized the importance of having a united team without egos or players driven solely by statistics.

“I never looked at the Birmingham weather leading up to this Test match. The way England played now makes sense. Call it what you want, some say Bazz Ball, I just think it’s smart Cricket. The best teams are prepared to adapt and play situations in a way that’ll ultimately put them in a winning position more often than the rest, whether that’s by making bold declarations or playing reverse sweeps a lot, whatever it takes,”  de Villiers posted on Twitter.

According to de Villiers, the success of this approach relies on everyone embracing the philosophy, much like he observed with MS Dhoni's Chennai Super Kings in the IPL.

“The only way to make it impactful is to have a complete buy in from every individual, no egos, no stats driven players, just a full on buy in to be the best team in the world. That’s how I see the Eng team play atm (at the moment). Also saw that with MSD and co. in the IPL,”  de Villiers concluded.

While de Villiers commended England's smart cricket, he also acknowledged that Australia still possesses an unlikely chance of winning the match. Despite the advantage held by England, de Villiers recognizes the unpredictable nature of the game and the potential for Australia to turn the tide in their favor.
