In a remarkable turn of events, legendary batter Steve Smith has set the record for the most hundreds by an Australian against India in Test cricket. Smith hammered a glorious hundred on day 2 of the ongoing World Test Championship final to eclipse former Australian captain Ricky Ponting's tally of eight centuries, etching his name in history books. The batter also joined Joe Root in most tons against India in the purest format.

Most centuries for Australia vs India in Tests

  • Steve Smith: 9 hundreds in 19 matches
  • Ricky Ponting: 8 hundreds in 29 matches
  • Michael Clarke: 7 hundreds in 22 matches
  • David Boon: 6 hundreds in 11 matches
  • Matthew Hayden: 6 hundreds in 18 matches

After enjoying stellar success in Tests from 2014 to 2019, Smith had an off season in 2020. However, the batter from New South Wales was quick to bounce back, averaging over fifty in the subsequent three seasons.

Smith blew hot and cold in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, played earlier this year. So, many cricket pundits predicted him to have an ordinary outing in the WTC final. However, the former Australian captain has silenced his critics, amassing a stupendous ton in the ultimate Test.

Riding on scintillating hundreds from Smith and Travis Head, Australia are in the driving seat, placed at 346 for three at the time of writing.
