The morning of Saturday brought a shocking news when it was revealed that former cricketer-turned actor, Salil Ankola's mother was found dead in her apartment with her throat slit in her kitchen. The news has sent shockwaves in the cricketing fraternity and Ankola has come under the spotlight.

Who is Salil Ankola? The cricketer who played with Sachin Tendulkar

Born in 1968, Ankola always dreamt of becoming a cricketer and his dream came true in 1988 when he was selected in the Maharashtra squad. The young pacer quickly made a name for himself, and the following year, made his India debut.

Interestingly, Ankola made his debut alongside the great Sachin Tendulkar, but unlike Sachin, his cricketing career spiralled down. Injuries took a toll on the fast bowler and he only managed to play a solitary Test match and 20 ODIs.

The rise as an actor

Post cricket, Ankola shifted his interest towards acting, and worked in some popular shows of that era - Chahat aur Nafrat, Kora Kaagaz, and he also participated in the reality show, Big Boss in its inaugural season.

In 2008, things changed for bad and his acting career started the downward curve. He wasn't getting any prominent roles and the actor became an alcoholic. However, in 2011, he bounced back from the ashes and did prominent role in Saavdhan India.

What happened to Ankola's mother?

On Friday, the body of Mala Ankola, Salil's mother was found in her apartment in Pune with her throat slit. "The incident came to light after her maid came to the flat and then alerted relatives after no one answered the door," a Police official said.

As of now, Police have filed a report of accidental death and further investigations have started to determine what really happened with Mala Ankola.
