In a shocking development, ace New Zealand seamer Trent Boult was released from the central contract in August last year, following his wish to explore opportunities in global T20 leagues.

As the cricketer continues to be irregular in the national setup, his participation in the upcoming ODI World Cup remains an unsolved puzzle.

However, New Zealand chief selector Gavin Larsen has expected the veteran player to be available for the showpiece event.

During his conversation with SENZ, Larsen revealed that Boult has been in touch with the head coach Gary Stead, and if everything goes right, he will open the bowling for the BlackCaps in the mega event.

"Gary and Trent talk on a regular basis. We all know Boulty's pedigree, his experience and what a great match-winner he is and has been over the years for us. We want him to be involved, we'd love him to be involved, we understand entirely his situation so we will keep working with him. We've got a World Cup at the end of the year and I've got my fingers crossed that if the stars align that we'll have a certain Trent Boult opening the bowling for us."

Boult has been an efficient servant of New Zealand Cricket, scalping 187 wickets in 99 ODI appearances. The 33-year-old played his last ODI game against Australia in September last year.
