Shubman Gill played one of the most exciting innings played by an Indian batter on Wednesday in the first ODI against New Zealand.

With his 208 in Hyderabad, young Gill broke half a dozen records and bagged praises from all across the globe, simultaneously.

However, despite the Indian opener's sensational double-century; the Blackcaps almost came out victorious of the chase of 350 runs. One prime of that was not getting ample support from the other batters.

India's second highest-scorer was Rohit Sharma, who scored a mere 34. Meanwhile, New Zealand's Michael Bracewell was well-supported by Mitchell Santner in their historic eighth-wicket stand of 162 runs.

While applauding Gill's double ton and criticising the other Indian batters, Virat Kohli in a video on bcci.tv said, "I would call it outstanding. Especially considering that the next best score wasn't even 40, and the fact that he got a double hundred was a knock at a very, very high level."

The Indian skipper also singled out the fact Gill was too special in the first ODI and congratulated in a post-match interview.

"The way you constructed your innings was superb to watch because on the other side we were losing wickets at regular intervals. It is not easy for a set batsman to continue batting in a similar fashion with wickets falling on the other end. Our next best score is 34 after your 208, and that tells you a lot how well you batted," the India captain cited.

India next will be battling with the Tom Latham-led side in Raipur for the second ODI fixture, where both teams will come with different motivations.
