Sydney Thunder have announced the re-signing of batter Sam Whiteman for the upcoming edition of the Big Bash league. Whiteman represented Thunder last season as a cover for Usman Khawaja.

Whiteman has been in red-hot form of late, scoring runs in buckets for Western Australia in domestic cricket. The left-handed batter has won as many as three BBL titles with his former side Perth Scorchers.

Overall, in 40 BBL matches since its third edition, Whiteman has scored 531 runs and hit two fifties.

In a statement, Whiteman expressed his pleasure of rejoining the side.

"Sydney Thunder has an exciting group of players. I see this season as a wonderful opportunity for myself and the group. There is a nice balance here between the young players and the squad’s experienced heads. I see similarities to my time with Perth."

Head of Thunder Andrew Gilchrist also spoke highly of Whiteman's impact.

"Sam showed us why he’s so highly respected throughout Australian cricket. He fitted in from day one, and he was a tremendous influence around the players,"

The Thunder begins their BBL 12 campaign against the Melbourne Stars on December 13.
