South Africa defeated England by 27 runs in the first ODI on Friday. Despite a valiant effort from Jason Roy, who scored a majestic century, England lost the plot in the middle overs and eventually lost the game.

Chasing 299, England started off on a positive note, but wickets kept tumbling at regular intervals and Roy lost partners at the other end.

After the match, skipper Jos Buttler rued missed chances and was disappointed not to win the game from a strong position.

"Disappointed. Although we played superb cricket for the majority of the game, the way we ended was disappointing. Given that the wicket was favorable for batting, I was pleased with how we contained them.

We ought to proceed. Over the years, having that compassion and dedication has helped us a lot. South Africa deserves praise for their bowling. When the ball is new, it is easiest to bat with; as the ball ages, it becomes more difficult. I was disappointed not to win."

Talking about the match, South Africa posted a healthy 298 on the board, courtesy of a gritty century from the ever-reliant Rassie van der Dussen (111 off 117). The target proved to be a bit too much for the World Champions.

The second ODI of the series will be played on January 29.
