Sri Lankan batter Danushka Gunathilaka has been taken under custody for a sexual assault case in Australia during the T20 World Cup 2022. Gunathilaka has also been suspended from Sri Lankan Cricket.

Gunathilaka was taken under Australian custody and it has been reported that Sri Lanka Cricket will cooperate to carry out the necessary inquires by the Australian police into the offence. Furthermore, steps will be taken to penalise the player, if found guilty.

Former Sri Lankan cricketer Mahela Jayawardene and Gunathilaka's lawyer has commented on the matter.

Mahela Jayawardene (Sri Lanka Consultant Coach and former cricketer) commented

"The players who go on these tournaments are not school kids, they are professionals and they must take responsibility for their behaviour and the decisions they make."

"As a team we have limitations in which we should behave and we participated in the tournament fully aware of these boundaries. Unfortunately, these incidents have happened in the last two days. It's really sad that such things had to happen but as I said before we will need to find out what happened, actually, according to the law of that country."

Gunathilaka's lawyer also commented on the matter

"He's holding on well considering the circumstances. But he has the full support of the High Commission, the Sri Lankan High Commission and the Sri Lankan Cricket Board so he's ok at the moment."
