Australian batter Matt Renshaw's return to the international scene after a long hiatus took a dramatic turn on Wednesday morning ahead of the start of the third Test against South Africa as he tested positive for COVID-19.

Renshaw was named in Australia's playing eleven for the first time in five years. The left-handed batter piled up a truckload of runs to earn the recall. But on day 1 of the third and final Test of the series, he returned positive for COVID-19

A Covid diagnosis after the toss meant that the southpaw had to spend his Test return isolating from his teammates, including spending the bulk of the match on the sidelines near boundary rope as rain fell throughout the first few days in Sydney.

Despite feeling unwell before the game, Renshaw came out to bat and scored unbeaten five runs off 11 balls to mark his return.

Speaking on Fox Cricket, Renshaw said it felt weird for a couple of days after the start of the third Test.

"It was a weird two days before you bat, to not spend time with anyone, sit on your own in your own dressing room. It was an interesting story I’ll be able to tell the grandkids. When I first got in there, I just dumped everything.

I was pretty low at the point, thought I wouldn’t be able to do anything. A couple of crosswords, and a couple of sudokus, a lot of game of patience,"  Matt Renshaw told Fox Sports.
