After India's disastrous semifinal exit in the T20 World Cup, the BCCI was forced to bring significant changes to the T20I setup. As a result, seniors were rested and Hardik Pandya was chosen to lead in two successive series.

With a lot of buzz revolving around split captaincy, former Indian opener Aakash Chopra has backed Pandya to lead the team in the shortest format at least until the next World Cup.

Although Chopra reckoned Rohit would lead the side in Tests and ODIs, he picked Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant as the potential captains going forward.

Here's what Chopra stated

"I don’t think we will see a single captain for all formats just yet, I think those days are over. Rohit Sharma will be the Test team’s captain till the WTC, that’s not going to change - it is going to stay like that. Hardik Pandya is currently the captain in the T20 format, and I think he will continue to do so and in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024, you will see Pandya be the captain of the Indian team,

"In One-Day cricket, Rohit Sharma will continue to be the captain till the World Cup. But I think in the long term, in terms of India’s captaincy, it will be Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant. These are my two candidates for India’s captaincy in the future."

Meanwhile, India suffered a 21-run defeat against New Zealand in the first T20I in Ranchi on Friday. So, they will look to bounce back when they play the next game in Lucknow on Sunday.
