Indian middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer will be seen playing domestic cricket for Mumbai in the ongoing Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) 2022. Iyer, who was named as one of the stand-by players of the Indian ICC T20 World Cup 2022 squad earlier, has joined his Mumbai teammates in Rajkot and will be available for selection for the tie against Rajasthan on Tuesday (October 20) as per a report in Cricbuzz.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) have permitted Iyer to be the unofficial 16th member of the squad.

The BCCI have informed the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) that it will allow 16 players in the squad, but only 15 can sit in the dug-out. Last-minute draftee Suryansh Shedge, who came in for Shardul Thakur, will be sitting out of the dug-out to accommodate Iyer.

Iyer was to travel with the Indian squad to Australia, but multiple injuries to bowlers led to him being swapped for bowlers. The 27-year-old is coming off a good run in the One-Day International format and will look to continue his form in the shortest version.

Skipper Ajinkya Rahane, who sprained his ankle during match against Madhya Pradesh, is expected to be back for the Rajasthan encounter, after missing out on games against Assam and Vidarbha, where Prithvi Shaw was in-charge.

Mumbai currently top their Group A table, with four win out of four.
